Former tourism minister Khaled El Anany was elected Director-General <\/strong>of Unesco<\/strong>, becoming the first Egyptian and Arab, and the second African, to hold the position, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement<\/a>. El Anany got backing from 55 out of 57 member states of Unesco\u2019s executive board. The election follows a 30-month campaign led by the ministry under the president\u2019s guidance, which included visits to 65 countries.<\/p>\n

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi <\/strong>congratulated<\/a><\/strong> El Anany on what he called a \u201chistoric <\/strong>achievement<\/strong>,\u201d<\/strong> describing it as a \u201cwell-deserved triumph\u201d that reflects \u201cEgypt\u2019s standing as a great civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n

The new director is set to face a funding shortage<\/strong> following US President Donald Trump\u2019s decision<\/a> in July to pull his country out of the agency, claiming it supports \u201cwoke, divisive cultural and social causes.\u201d The US withdrawal is set to take effect on 31 December 2026.<\/p>\n

Swedish telecom<\/strong> and networking giant Ericsson appointed Dalia Merheb <\/strong>(<\/strong>LinkedIn<\/a><\/strong>) as its new country manager and head of sales for its Egypt office,<\/strong> according to a statement seen by EnterpriseAM.
