When the UK's <\/strong>prime minister<\/strong> and the US president start off on the wrong foot, but realize they're stuck with each other, what happens next?<\/strong> Directed by Russian filmmaker Ilya Naishuller, Heads of State<\/a> follows the two world leaders \u2014 initially at odds \u2014 as they team up to bring down Viktor Gradov (Paddy Considine), the world\u2019s most dangerous drug dealer and organized crime mastermind.<\/p>\n

A tomato festival gone rotten: <\/strong>When a joint covert CIA and MI6 operation to ambush Gradov at an Italian tomato food fight festival (and yes, that\u2019s a real thing<\/a>) goes wrong, leaving special agent Noel Bisset (Priyanka Chopra) MIA and the world\u2019s top secret surveillance system compromised, UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba) and US President Will Derringer (John Cena) find themselves in a tough spot: they need to put aside their differences and show solidarity. An easy task \u2014 if only they could stand each other. <\/p>\n

TV star turned president \u2014 sound familiar? <\/strong>Despite being highly qualified, Clarke is losing voter confidence. Meanwhile, Derringer \u2014 a former Hollywood star who somehow ended up in the Oval Office \u2014 is enjoying unprecedented support and love from the American public. Clarke is stunned that US citizens elected an arrogant action star to lead their country, but it doesn\u2019t seem that far-fetched to us.<\/p>\n

Air Force One down: <\/strong>To demonstrate strength and unity, Derringer invites Clarke to join him aboard Air Force One. However, things go awry when Gradov\u2019s team \u2014 who have hijacked a mass surveillance system \u2014 manage to take down the president\u2019s jet. Everyone on board is killed except for the president and the prime minister, who managed to escape at the last second using a pair of defective parachutes.<\/p>\n

From sheep trucks to glass bunkers, these heads of state face it all\u2026 together. <\/strong>After surviving the plane crash, the leaders discover a larger plot is at play: an inside job to take down NATO. At first, they think they've caught the US insider helping Gradov, but they soon realize they\u2019ve been fooled again, and the real culprit is much more powerful than they initially believed.<\/p>\n

A mix of comedy and nonstop action. <\/strong>The film is packed with exciting sequences, fight scenes, and impressive maneuvers. Cena and Elba\u2019s characters are well written, and all their jokes (and Chopra\u2019s puns) land. The action-comedy succeeds in making us laugh while clearly showing what\u2019s at stake. It\u2019s a comedy that takes itself seriously, and that\u2019s why it works so well \u2014 a refreshing change from the clich\u00e9 action-comedies we\u2019ve seen lately.<\/p>\n
