The public-private partnerships (PPPs), which have been delayed for over two years, will move forward with an initial batch of two to four plants, we were told.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links <\/strong>to our background as well as external sources.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>It was <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/331dbd92-5979-4739-8298-74845078ce35\/egypt-to-sign-contracts-for%253cmark%253e-21-desalination-plants%253c%2Fmark%253e-next-year--soliman\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> in December 2022 that Egypt will sign contracts to build 21 desalination plants in 2023, as part of the first USD 3 bn phase of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/64f6386d-108e-41cd-872e-ace09bcbf196\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">government\u2019s plans<\/a> since 2020 to expand the country\u2019s desalination capacity. These plants are expected to process a combined 3.3 mn cubic meters of water per day. The program will later expand to 8.8 mn cubic meters per day by 2050 at a total cost of USD 8 bn. More than 200 developers from 35 countries at the time were said to have shown interest in bidding for the projects. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A lack of suitable land and issues with water characteristics and safety testing have been<\/strong> <strong>holding back the offerings<\/strong>, our source told us. Before the float of the EGP, senior officials also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/20a3c2c0-fef3-4911-9e97-32a6f8683cb7\/the-gov%25e2%2580%2599t-is-pacing-out-its-water%253cmark%253e-desalination%253c%2Fmark%253e-plant-plans-on-fx-challenges-%2B-land-allocations\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">told EnterpriseAM<\/a> that exchange rate fluctuations had complicated project calculations, resulting in delays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What\u2019s next? <\/strong>The same 17 consortiums <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/f776d860-3854-414f-b89b-c8755dae0862\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">previously prequalified<\/a> by the Sovereign Fund of Egypt are still on to bid for the projects, the government source confirmed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Even more water desalination projects incoming: <\/strong>The consortium that was awarded a USD 300 mn desalination plant in the SCZone \u2014 separate from the government\u2019s PPPs \u2014 will be announced in 1Q 2026, the source said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>DATA POINT- <\/strong>As of the start of the year, Egypt operated 125 desalination plants, with a total combined capacity of 1.3 mn cubic meters per day, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86-%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%B1-%D8%B9%D9%86-%D9%88%D8%B2%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A5%D8%B3%D9%83%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%81%D9%82-%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AC%D8%AA%D9%85%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B9%D9%85%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A%D8%A9%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%A6%D8%A8-%D9%88%D8%B2%D9%8A%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A5%D8%B3%D9%83%D8%A7%D9%86-%D9%8A%D8%A8%D8%AD%D8%AB-%D8%A3\/1130110229159396\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> from the Housing Ministry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>SPEAKING OF- The National <\/strong><strong>Authority<\/strong><strong> for Military Production signed an MoU with <\/strong><strong>Japan\u2019s Mizuha<\/strong> to cooperate on designing, testing, and manufacturing air-to-water generation stations with a capacity of 500 liters of drinking water per day, according to a Military Production Ministry <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/1342322904604793?ref=embed_post\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">state<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/1342322904604793?ref=embed_post\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ment<\/a>.
