Speaking to us this week is Mahmoud Barakat (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/linkedin.com\/in\/mahmoudbarakat?originalSubdomain=eg\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn<\/a>), founder of Egyptian confectionary brand <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mokochocolates\/?hl=en\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u014dko Chocolates<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>My name is Mahmoud Barakat, I\u2019m the founder of M\u014dko, Egypt\u2019s premium artisanal <\/strong><strong>chocolate and confectionery brand<\/strong>, built to international standards. We believe that chocolate should be part of everyday life, not limited to special occasions. I have a Bachelor\u2019s and MBA in economics and finance from the University of Toronto\u2019s Rotman School of Management. My education really taught me how to think analytically \u2014 which is invaluable when working in the F&B industry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Before I started M\u014dko, I kicked off my career in private equity<\/strong>, later joining my father at his private equity fund here in Egypt. Then I came to inherit our family\u2019s confectionary factory from my grandmother, and discovered that this could be a career path that I wanted to take \u2014 the entrepreneurial path. The factory used to operate under a different brand name, and M\u014dko officially launched in 2021.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Extensive research showed us that it was about time for an Egyptian premium brand <\/strong><strong>to enter the market <\/strong>\u2014 it was a clear opportunity to create something that didn\u2019t exist yet. Even though I\u2019m not a chef, I took chocolate and gelato courses in Belgium and Italy. There\u2019s a lot of knowledge required to make good chocolate, and I wanted that know-how. We launched slowly with a few products in supermarkets and saw that there was the demand we expected.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Other chocolate brands position themselves around gifting and special occasions, <\/strong><strong>but we saw a different opportunity<\/strong> \u2014 chocolate should be accessible. We wanted to go for vibrant packaging to reflect that philosophy, as we noticed that our competitors were just going with black and gold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I felt successful when I realized that people were consuming our products as part of <\/strong><strong>their daily routine<\/strong> \u2014 going from one location to seven made me feel like we\u2019ve become part of people\u2019s lives. Another moment was seeing international visitors come to our stores and enjoy what Egypt had to offer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In five years, I see M\u014dko as a regional brand and a leader in artisanal confectionery <\/strong><strong>and chocolate<\/strong>. We already have our sights set on expanding to the Middle East very soon, bringing new offerings to the region while scaling thoughtfully and maintaining quality. That\u2019s been our ethos and our goal over the past couple of years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I started this business at a very economically turbulent time, and we\u2019ve learned so <\/strong><strong>much in a short span<\/strong>. We had to deal with supply chain obstructions and crazy cost flights, and we adapted by diversifying our product lines to circumvent certain price increases. Our most important takeaway was that our customer loyalty was rooted in our consistency. Supply chain issues or price increases aren\u2019t the customer\u2019s problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There are things I\u2019d like to change about the industry<\/strong>, with the first thing being supply chain resilience. Being able to source locally and having alternative networks will give everyone more stability and will allow business owners to focus on quality rather than logistical crisis management. This will pour into operational discipline, seeing as consistency is everything. The second thing would be consumer education. Many don\u2019t understand the craftsmanship that goes into the products \u2014 there\u2019s an art behind chocolate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Watching our vision turn into reality and seeing our team grow gives me so much<\/strong><strong> satisfaction<\/strong>. On the other hand, maintaining quality in an environment that\u2019s constantly changing \u2014 from ingredients to supply chains \u2014 is a constant challenge. It can also get hectic, given that it\u2019s a 24\/7 job. I don\u2019t think work-life balance exists in entrepreneurship. Work comes in waves and seasons \u2014 sometimes you\u2019re running to meet deadlines, and some weeks are a little more relaxed. It\u2019s about managing priorities, moment to moment. It\u2019s less about having an unrealistic equilibrium of \u201cI have to be there at X and leave at Y.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>I love listening to audiobooks<\/strong>, and one that I\u2019ve enjoyed recently is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/38743564-billion-dollar-whale\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bn Dollar<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/38743564-billion-dollar-whale\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Whale<\/a>. It\u2019s a non-fiction account of one of the biggest financial heists in the world. It\u2019s very, very riveting \u2014 and an interesting story about thieves. I\u2019ve listened to it more than once, and I found it very well researched.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>If I weren\u2019t the brain behind M\u014dko?<\/strong> I don\u2019t know. I love to travel, I love going fishing, but I don\u2019t know what I would do in life. It\u2019s not like I grew up a chocolate aficionado \u2014 I was thrown into it and I found that it was something I had a passion for. This is going to sound clich\u00e9, but if I went back in time, I\u2019d tell myself to trust the process, celebrate everyday wins, and know that building a business comes in increments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Every success story takes its own time<\/strong>, and you should filter out the noise of other success stories and focus on building something solid. Every problem has a solution, and you\u2019ll find it eventually.
