Wall Street\u2019s AI rally faces a critical test this week as chipmaker Nvidia <\/strong>gears <\/strong>up to release its earnings later today<\/strong>, the Financial Times<\/a> reports. Nvidia has become the poster child for the artificial intelligence boom that has reshaped markets since late 2022. Investors see the company\u2019s performance \u2014 and its guidance \u2014 as a proxy for AI\u2019s broader economic promise.<\/p>\n

Nvidia doesn\u2019t just set the direction for AI and AI-related stocks, but the whole of the <\/strong>S&P 500.<\/strong> The company \u2014 now the most valuable publicly listed firm in the world with a market capitalization of USD 4.4 bn \u2014 has been the single biggest contributor to the S&P 500\u2019s almost 10% YTD gain. <\/p>\n

The company\u2019s earnings could shape the direction of the market for weeks and even <\/strong>months to come<\/strong>, with traders bracing today for a high-volatility moment that could either reignite market momentum or trigger a pullback. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a single stock,\u201d said Pictet Asset Management Portfolio Manager Arun Sai. \u201cIt\u2019s very unusual \u2014 people read through it to the economy as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s concern that Nvidia shares are already overvalued<\/strong>, with shares of the chipmaker trading at 40x its expected earnings, according to FactSet. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 as a whole is trading at 28x forward earnings \u2014 well above its 25-year average of 22x.<\/p>\n

I<\/strong>nvestor jitters intensified last week after a <\/strong>downbeat MIT report<\/a><\/strong>and a <\/strong>warning<\/a><\/strong> from <\/strong>OpenAI CEO Sam Altman<\/strong>, who said \u201cinvestors are over excited\u201d about AI and that \u201csome are likely to lose a lot of money.\u201d The comments have cast a shadow over a sector many fear may be approaching a bubble territory \u2014 putting even more weight on Nvidia\u2019s earnings. \u201cThey are the locomotive of this AI train,\u201d said Citigroup\u2019s Jon Zauderer. Futurum Group\u2019s Daniel Newman added that \u201can unexpected surprise would be the ultimate and fastest way to send the market into a tailspin.\u201d<\/p>\n

But despite doubts, expectations are still sky-high<\/strong>, with the consensus being that Nvidia reports USD 46 bn in revenue for its July quarter \u2014 a 53% y-o-y increase. While that\u2019s slower than the 69% growth it posted last quarter, and well off the 250%+ pace of early 2024, some analysts say the market will focus more on relative performance. \u201cPeople will be more focused on growth relative to peers, and right now they are doing very well in that regard,\u201d said Morgan Stanley\u2019s Joseph Moore.<\/p>\n

The EGX30 fell 1.3% at yesterday\u2019s close<\/strong> on turnover of EGP 6.1 bn (15.6% above the 90-day average). Local investors were the sole net buyers. The index is up 18.9% YTD.<\/p>\n

In the green: <\/strong>Beltone Holding (+2.3%), Rameda (+1.9%), and Qalaa Holdings (+1.4%).<\/p>\n

In the red: <\/strong>Misr Cement (-6.2%), Arabian Cement (-3.1%), and Fawry (-2.3%).<\/p>\n

CORPORATE ACTIONS- <\/p>\n

Acrow Misr\u2019s board approved moving ahead with procedures to <\/strong>voluntarily delist the company\u2019s shares from the EGX<\/strong>, according to a disclosure (pdf)<\/a> from the scaffolding and formwork manufacturer.<\/p>\n

What about shareholders who want out?<\/strong> The company will be required to buy out shareholders and pledgees who do not wish to remain invested at no less than the stock\u2019s highest closing price over the past month (EGP 95.45), its average closing price for the last three months (EGP 70.71), or its fair value, which an FRA-licensed independent financial advisor will determine.
