The New York-headquartered firm is teeing up an offer that would give it majority interest in the domestic credit rating agency as it looks to broaden its presence in the region. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">(<strong>Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links <\/strong>to our background as well as external sources.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>MERIS is currently the only credit agency operating in Egypt. <\/strong>The firm was set up in 2003 as a joint venture between Moody\u2019s and local consultant Finance and Banking Consultants International (FinBi). It issues domestic credit ratings for banks, companies, and structured finance transactions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What they said: <\/strong>Monica Merli, Moody\u2019s COO, said MERIS has been a key provider of domestic ratings for over two decades and that a larger stake would allow Moody\u2019s to share more of its global best practices. MERIS founder Amr Hassanein said the move would allow the firm to deepen its offerings while maintaining a local focus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What we know: <\/strong>Following the planned acquisition, MERIS will continue to operate independently with its own management team, rating methodologies, and credit opinions. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed, and it is currently pending regulatory approval. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IN CONTEXT- MERIS\u2019 long run without competition is set to end.<\/strong> In <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/628c2580-2ec3-4e09-bece-15ce866fb39b\/beltone-financial-holding,-crif-alliance-is-setting-up-egypt%25e2%2580%2599s-second-credit-rating-agency\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">June of last year<\/a>, the Financial Regulatory Authority gave the greenlight to Beltone Financial and Italy\u2019s CRIF Ratings to set up Egypt\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3a3accc7-2e9f-4d99-9c22-c9931377ef35\/beltone-capital-and-italy%25e2%2580%2599s%253cmark%253e-crif%253c%2Fmark%253e-ratings-form-jv-to-launch-the-country%25e2%2580%2599s-second-credit-rating-agency\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">second credit rating agency<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The FRA has been pushing for more players since 2022<\/strong>, when it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/d087ef18-4b4b-4559-ac5d-ac851785b9eb\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">scrapped a rule<\/a> requiring at least 10% foreign ownership of local agencies to encourage new entrants.
