The narrator remains nameless, but is given a clear identity, a set of characteristics, and a link to the story\u2019s true protagonist: Mustafa Sa\u2019eed. Mustafa followed a similar path years earlier: he was a young man who was an expat, moving between Khartoum, Cairo, and London. He harbors feelings of rage and hatred toward the colonial powers that had brought ruin and misery to his country \u2014 yet must also navigate his reality as a privileged member of the English society, from which he seeks revenge. <\/p>\n

Caught between vengeance and sorrow<\/strong>: The novel is inherently about revenge and the deep-seated anger held by colonized people toward the powers that continue to occupy them.
