Now it\u2019s betting that everything old can be new again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> ? <strong>Ubisoft, once one of the most reliable hit-makers in the videogame <\/strong><strong>industry is pinning its hopes on a five-word turnaround strategy: Everything old is new again. <\/strong>Looking to erase memories of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ubisoft-financial-report-losses-2025\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a USD 177.9 mn loss in its 2024-2025 fiscal year<\/a>, the France-headquartered game studio has unveiled a turnaround strategy that hinges on the release of a plethora of Assassin's Creed titles, new and old, in ambitious numbers and on an arduous schedule.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember when everything Ubisoft touched turned to gold? <\/strong>It\u2019s the studio that was responsible for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/store.ubisoft.com\/us\/far-cry?lang=en_US\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Far Cry<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ubisoft.com\/en-gb\/game\/rainbow-six\/siege\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Rainbow Six Siege<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/store.ubisoft.com\/us\/prince-of-persia?lang=en_US\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Prince of Persia<\/a>, and, most of all, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/store.ubisoft.com\/us\/assassins-creed?lang=en_US\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/a> \u2014 the latter a franchise that has booked revenues of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/ckgz0vxkx3po\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 4.2 bn on the sale of 200 mn copies<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That was then. The new face of Ubisoft is of a one-time powerhouse that has <\/strong><strong>experienced a remarkable fall from grace:<\/strong> Sales during last year\u2019s critical Christmas quarter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/80.lv\/articles\/ubisoft-s-sales-down-nearly-50-more-layoffs-studio-closures-likely\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">were down 47.5%<\/a> year-on-year. Ubisoft\u2019s most recent release \u2014 Assassin\u2019s Creed Shadows \u2014 has sold 2.4 mn copies since it was released four and a half months ago. That\u2019s less than a quarter of the 10 mn copies Black Flag sold in its first three months on shelves. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What gives? Plenty of players think Ubisoft has cheated them. <\/strong>Where to begin. Maybe with the view that it has failed to deliver on gameplay promises \u2014 holding out hope of traditional gameplay, only for players to encounter <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.gamefa.com\/2889\/a-look-at-the-rise-and-fall-of-ubisoft\/#:~:text=By%20Amir%20fathi,did%20Ubisoft%20fall%20from%20grace?\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fantasy mechanisms in recent games<\/a>. Then there\u2019s the feeling that it has offered <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/xander51.medium.com\/the-epic-failure-of-ubisoft-edc739f8bfa5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201ctrend-centered games\u201d<\/a>. Recycled storylines and maps, diverged from base plots, and turned a blind eye to fan feedback \u2014 and to in-house scandals. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The question that fans and investors alike have been asking: Is there a road to <\/strong><strong>recovery?<\/strong> Ubisoft thinks the road runs through the release of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/insider-gaming.com\/exclusive-further-details-on-the-assassins-creed-roadmap-and-what-games-to-expect\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">no fewer than nine Assassin\u2019s Creed titles<\/a> in the next four years. On the roadmap: A mobile game (Jade), two competitive multi-player games (Invictus and Emerald), three big-title-games (Hexe, Scarlet, and RPG3), and three remakes of past Assassin\u2019s Creed titles (Obsidian, Stardust, and a still-untitled remake). (Obsidian is a remake of Black Flag \u2014 it\u2019s unclear what the other titles will re-imagine.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What does betting the house on AC tell us about Ubisoft\u2019s intentions and future?<\/strong> What rings the loudest to us is not one, but three remakes of past games \u2014 and it\u2019s not just about updating to a new Anvil engine. Fans have met every recent AC release with tidal waves of disgruntlement. Seen charitably, nine Assassin\u2019s Creed titles represent a bid to rebuild the faith of the Assassin's Creed fanbase.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What do the faithful want? <\/strong>Fan sites suggest plenty of players miss the old Assassin\u2019s Creed formula and want more stealth, original storylines, and no \u201cchoose-your-own-adventure\u201d template. Remaking three classic titles suggests that Ubisoft is becoming aware of these preferences \u2014 and that it\u2019s become more open to feedback. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There are a couple of problems with the strategy. <\/strong>First, there may be format diversity (big-title RPGs, online multiplayers, and mobile games), but it all hinges on one franchise. And Ubisoft is already struggling to meet expectations: It has a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tweaktown.com\/news\/105245\/ubisoft-announces-delay-for-major-titles-including-assassins-creed-and-far-cry\/index.html#:~:text=Ubisoft%20has%20announced%20it%20will,game%2C%20codenamed%20%22Ovr%22.&text=Join%20the%20TweakTown%20Newsletter%20for,exclusive%20subscriber%2Donly%20global%20giveaways!\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">history of delaying title releases<\/a> and its current roadmap juggles games of multiple genres and magnitudes. There\u2019s real risk of overexertion here, with so many different games in a narrow window of time raising questions about quality and heart. (If Ubisoft is so insistent on returning to its roots, why push out <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/assassins-creed-multiplayer-game-fall-guys\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a whole new Fall Guy-inspired platform<\/a>, some might ask?). A course-correction that mollifies long-time players would be welcome \u2014 but it will ring hollow if it proves a sales-driven bid to cling to past roots while paying lip service to diversification. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The bottom line: Ubisoft\u2019s future hinges on its ability to launch these titles with quality <\/strong><strong>\u2014 and on time. <\/strong>As fans of Ubisoft and of Assassin\u2019s Creed, we\u2019re taking the news with a gigabyte of salt.
