A return to form. <\/strong>In 1996, Motorola released<\/a> the world\u2019s first flip phone, the Startac \u2014 a simple, compact, and inconspicuous device that would go on to inspire other manufacturers. The flip became one of the noughties\u2019 most popular phone form factors, but by the early 2010s, they all but died out \u2014 until now. From Google to Samsung, and \u2014 if the rumors are true \u2014 Apple, flip phones are back in fashion, and they\u2019re smarter than ever. <\/p>\n

Is it just a nod to nostalgia? <\/strong>There certainly is a vintage appeal to modern flip phones, with many users who made the switch taking to social media to recreate iconic pop culture moments featuring the classic flips. Yet, it\u2019s not just nostalgia driving the flip\u2019s resurgence \u2014 it\u2019s convenience. Flip smartphones are compact, easy to operate, and offer all the perks one has come to expect from a flagship smartphone. With today\u2019s tech and yesteryear\u2019s form factor, manufacturers began to act. <\/p>\n

In 2020, Samsung released the first mainstream flip smartphone<\/strong>. The Korean tech giant claimed<\/a> that it \u201cbroke the laws of physics\u201d by bending glass. The device had its issues, including severe scratching and screen damage \u2014 those, however, would be addressed in later models within the series. Samsung\u2019s dare to bring back the flip \u2014 and introduce a new form factor which would expand the phone into a tablet \u2014 inspired myriad other manufacturers to do the same. Months after Samsung\u2019s flip debut, Motorola would release a new and improved smart model of its signature Razr \u2014 and so the race began.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re about to see a lot more flip smartphones<\/strong>. What was once deemed a passing fad<\/a> is potentially proving that it\u2019s here to stay. Since its debut, Samsung has released six more editions of its Z Flip models, with the upcoming seventh generation rumored<\/a> to be substantially thinner yet more powerful than its predecessors.<\/p>\n

Earlier in 2024, rumors began spreading that Apple was toying with the idea<\/strong> of a foldable iPhone<\/a>, with the latest pointing towards a potential 2026 release<\/a>. A belated start to the race, but that\u2019s just how Apple likes to do things. Google<\/a>, OnePlus<\/a>, Oppo<\/a>, and Honor<\/a> are also pushing out more and more flip and foldable models. <\/p>\n

While the numbers aren\u2019t skyrocketing, there\u2019s noticeable growth<\/strong>. According to IDC\u2019s Worldwide Foldable Phone Forecast<\/a>, total foldable phone shipments worldwide are expected to reach a total 45.7 mn units by 2028.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s a catch <\/strong>\u2014 they\u2019re significantly more expensive than traditional smartphones. Samsung\u2019s Z Fold 6 starts off at USD 1.1k<\/a>, and its counterparts aren\u2019t that far behind. Yet as competition heats up and manufacturing<\/a> becomes more efficient, it\u2019s likely that we\u2019ll be seeing a resurgence in the flip form factor \u2014 especially if Apple follows through on its plans. \u201cPrice cuts, increased durability, and perhaps a certain brand joining the party could be the catalyst in the years to come,\" the IDC forecast reads.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
