Buying the dip seems to have paid off for retail investors<\/strong>, with the strategy helping them collect their biggest YTD gains since the pandemic, the Financial Times<\/a> reported. Retail investors have poured some USD 155 bn into Wall Street and ETFs this year, offsetting the market\u2019s April losses caused by US tariffs, according to data from VandaTrack.<\/p>\n

By the numbers: <\/strong>Buying-the-dip investors enjoyed an estimated cumulative return of 31% this year from investing in the Nasdaq 100 index,<\/strong> heavy on large-cap US technology stocks, analysis by Bank of America (BoA) showed. Returns on the index \u2014 which has gained 7.8% YTD \u2014 are the best for BoA\u2019s hypothetical dip-buying model since early 2020, and the second best on record since 1985.<\/p>\n

Investors have increasingly acquired the habit of <\/strong>buying into stock weakness <\/strong>since the <\/strong>2008 global financial crisis<\/strong>, as US markets\u2019 downturns have proven to be short-lived. \u201cPops and drops will occur\u2026 but the dip-buying belief has become the new religion,\u201d Mike Zigmont of Visdom Investment Group told the salmon colored paper.<\/p>\n

Right on the money: <\/strong>The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed at all-time highs on Friday<\/a> as investors became increasingly confident the Trump administration will not move forward with severe tariffs. The plans sent stock markets tumbling when they were announced back in April, with the following months seeing increasing volatility.<\/p>\n

BUT-<\/strong> The strategy is risky, as dip-buyers opt not to cashout when prices go up, chair of asset management group Research Affiliates Rob Arnott told the FT. \u201cDip-buying works brilliantly until it doesn\u2019t. When you have a meltdown, it\u2019s a quick path to deep regret,\u201d Arnott added.<\/p>\n

Asian markets are mixed this morning<\/strong>, mostly inching down after Trump announced a new 1 August deadline for tariffs taking effect. Japan\u2019s Nikkei is down 0.5%, while Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng is down 0.4%. Meanwhile, Wall Street futures are collectively in the red, also weighed down by the announcement.<\/p>\n
