Have you thanked ChatGPT lately?<\/strong> If you did, that makes you amongst the 70% of users who reported using niceties with AI chatbots. According to a December 2024 survey<\/a> by Future \u2014 a TechRadar<\/a> -backed publisher \u2014 most people put on their best behaviour when conversing with AI models. Why? 82% of the individuals surveyed claimed that it merely felt polite to do so, whereas the remaining 18% noted that their chirpy attitude was born out of fear that AI may one day become sentient<\/a> and hold them accountable for their manners.<\/p>\n

Does ChatGPT care? <\/strong>In conversation with Dazed<\/a>, John Nosta<\/a> \u2014 founder of innovation think take NostaLab \u2014 notes that he is among those who make an effort to be nice at AI\u2026 but not out of habit \u2014 out of intention. \u201cIt\u2019s less about politeness in the traditional sense and more about setting the tone for how I want to engage with these systems,\u201d says Nosta. In this sense, Nosta\u2019s approach is one that prioritizes the human experience.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about staying human. <\/strong>The thinker argues that \u2014 unless we deliberately make an effort \u2014 a cold, robotic approach when dealing with AI models may eventually leave an imprint on how we interact with our non-digital neighbors. Nosta notes that his adamance on maintaining niceties with the rising tech is born of a desire to maintain the \u201cmicro-behaviors\u201d that make humans, well, human.<\/p>\n

Being rude to AI? Being rude to waiters? It\u2019s all the same shiny red flag. <\/strong>The British lifestyle magazine makes a compelling argument<\/a> that being perceived as rude to AI may hold the same social weight as being perceived as rude to servers or retail workers. \u201cIf an object is alive enough for us to start having intimate conversations, friendly conversations, treating it as a really important person in our lives, even though it\u2019s not, it\u2019s alive enough for us to show courtesy to,\u201d sociologist<\/a> Sherry Turkle told The New York Times<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Turkle referenced a similar case \u2014 albeit one that is decades old \u2014 of children reporting <\/strong>real grief upon the digital deaths of their Tamagotchis<\/strong> \u2014 a popular \u201890s game device in which users were responsible for caring for virtual pets. The Tamagotchis<\/a> were \u201calive enough,\u201d and so is AI, as far as we\u2019re concerned.
