Net foreign reserves continued to increase m-o-m for the 32th consecutive month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Here\u2019s the breakdown, according to <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2025\/5\/439.JPG\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">CBE data (pdf)<\/a><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>FX reserves fell USD 812 mn<\/strong> to 34.3 bn in April, down from 35.1 bn in March;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gold reserves increased some <\/strong><strong>USD 1 bn<\/strong> to USD 13.6 bn, up from USD 12.6 bn;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Special drawing rights rose USD 176 mn<\/strong> to USD 194 mn, up from just USD 18 mn.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What the experts say:<\/strong> Banking expert Hany Abou El Fotouh described the figure as a \u201chistoric jump,\u201d but cautioned that the figure should be looked at in relation to external debt. He noted that while some of the increase came from real inflows like tourism revenues, remittances, and debt investments, \u201cthe largest chunk of the increase came from external financing \u2014 be it through international loans, regional deposits, or bond issuances.\u201d This, he said, ties the rise in reserves to an increase in external debt. \u201cFrom an economic perspective, there must be a balance to ensure this improvement is sustainable without a large rise in debt obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Real sustainability still in question:<\/strong> \u201cThe number is reassuring, but it could be temporary if not supported by actual increases in production and exports,\u201d he said, adding that if reserves are largely dependent on borrowing, they will fall again when repayments come due. He emphasized that \u201cthe rise in reserves gives the state better capacity to meet short-term external obligations,\u201d but said Egypt needs to \u201ccontrol the pace of borrowing, rationalize spending, and direct loans toward productive projects instead of covering import gaps.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Egypt\u2019s net foreign reserves have increased by <\/strong><strong>USD 12.8 bn since the <\/strong><strong>government <\/strong><strong>announced the <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/b0b97fcf-95b0-4d39-86ae-0a4989221520\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 35 bn Ras El Hekma agreement<\/a><\/strong> that coincided with the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ac569e2c-c6f2-480e-bdaa-3f1cd4f81d05\/what-got-us-there:-a-float-of-the-egyptian-pound-and-a-600-bps-rate-hike\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">float of the EGP<\/a> and FX liquidity returning to the official banking system, paving the way for more international funds. In February 2024 \u2014 the month immediately before the float \u2014 foreign reserves stood at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/98fd7df8-7e83-42c6-a867-b40af8430539\/could-we-sign-a-staff-level-agreement-with-the-imf-as-soon-as-today?\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD
