The Old Rent <\/strong>Law was the main talking point on the airwaves for the nth night running<\/strong>, as parliamentary discussions over the proposed amendments to the law continued to unfold.<\/p>\n

Skepticism over<\/strong> the data<\/strong> underpinning the law:<\/strong> Kelma Akhira\u2019s Lamees El Hadidi had coverage (watch, runtime: 1:28<\/a>) of growing debate in the House over the reliability of the 2017 data from state statistics agency Capmas used to draft the amendments. One MP told Al Hayah Al Youm\u2019s Lobna Asal (watch, runtime: 6:10<\/a>) that several lawmakers have requested updated figures from Capmas on the number of residential units still under the old rent system.<\/p>\n

If the amendments don\u2019t pass, contracts under the old rend system will be nullified<\/strong>, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mahmoud Fawzy told MPs during their discussion of the amendments, explaining that the move would come as a result of the Constitutional Court ruling that deemed fixed rents unconstitutional.
