USD dominance under pressure? <\/strong>Fund managers are warning policy volatility and trade barriers are threatening the USD\u2019s status as a safe haven for global capital, the Financial Times<\/a> reports. The greenback fell to a three-year low against the EUR on Friday, following US President Donald Trump\u2019s erratic policymaking and reciprocal tariff decisions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The slump is somewhat surprising<\/strong>, as the greenback typically strengthens during global financial stress, with investors seeking refuge in US treasury bonds. <\/p>\n

The reasons? <\/strong>The weaker USD \u2014 alongside the rise in bond yields \u2014 may point to a \u201ccapital flight,\u201d Fidelity International Senior Portfolio Manager Mike Riddell told the FT. \u201cThis suggests foreigners have been and are continuing to sell US stocks and sending their money elsewhere,\u201d Axios<\/a> reports, citing Howard Ward and John Belton, co-chief investment officers of value at Gabelli Funds.<\/p>\n

The trend may also have to do with the US president floating the rule of law and <\/strong>threatening the Federal Reserve<\/strong>, Edward Fishman, a former top sanctions official at the US State Department, told the FT. He speculated that this could lead, over time, to the emergence of a \u201cmulti-polar\u201d currency system where the EUR played a bigger role.<\/p>\n

Selling America: <\/strong>With nearly USD 2 tn in annual foreign capital inflows, the US saw its share of global capital flows rise to 41% in 2024 \u2014 nearly double the pre-pandemic levels \u2014 Axios reports, citing gov\u2019t data. However, the tariff-triggered sell-off of assets, including equities, bonds and the USD \u2014 a trend which ING interest rate strategists called \u201c sell America Inc.<\/a> \u201d \u2014 may threaten redirecting these inflows elsewhere.<\/p>\n

The drop led fund managers to doubt the USD\u2019s market dominance and role as a global <\/strong>capital haven<\/strong>, raising concerns about the greenback serving as a reserve currency during market volatility. \u201cThere is [now] a very good case for the end of [USD] exceptionalism,\u201d JPMorgan Asset Management Global Head of Fixed Income Bob Michele told the salmon-colored paper.<\/p>\n

BUT- A weaker USD can be a boon for the US, some economists argue.<\/strong> \u201cThe reserve function of the [USD] has caused persistent currency distortions and contributed to \u2026 unsustainable trade deficits,\u201d weighing down US competitiveness and manufacturing, said Stephen Miran, Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers (watch, runtime: 1:04:00<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The recent tariffs are meant to correct these dated trade trends<\/strong>, Miran said, adding that a weaker greenback may redistribute the \u201cburden of peace and security\u201d while returning dynamism to the US economy.<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s pause of tariffs on consumer electronics led Asian markets to climb this morning<\/strong>, with Hong Kong\u2019s Hang Seng up 2.7%, Japan\u2019s Nikkei up 1.6%, and mainland China\u2019s Shanghai Composite up 0.9%. Wall Street futures also indicate modest gains on market open.<\/p>\n
