Investment and the economy took center stage on Lamees El Hadidi\u2019s Kelma Akhira last <\/strong>night<\/strong>, with Investment Minister Hassan El Khatib sitting down with El Hadidi for a wide-ranging interview (watch, runtime: 1:14:28<\/a>). El Khatib said his top priority since taking office nine months ago has been pushing through long-overdue structural reforms. \u201cTime is our biggest challenge,\u201d he said, noting the government is dealing with policy legacies stretching back 15 years. \u201cWe have a real chance and a major challenge to deliver reforms, and the economic group knows what\u2019s at stake.\u201d<\/p>\n

El Khatib teased some still unannounced investments<\/strong>, telling El Hadid that \u201cwe are currently negotiating a number of deals similar to Ras El Hekma, but we can\u2019t announce them yet,\u201d El Khatib said. The minister also said that a tender for the development of Downtown Cairo and its ministerial district will soon be launched, with the government aiming to \u201cfinalize the offering booklet within eight weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outflows, <\/strong>yes \u2014 but policy is sound, El Khatib said<\/strong>, responding to a question on hot money outflows from Egypt\u2019s local debt market amid recent global volatility. \u201cI\u2019m confident we have a clear, investment-friendly monetary policy that targets inflation,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cthe flexible exchange rate ensures the competitiveness of Egyptian exports.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are currently negotiating with the <\/strong>US<\/strong> side to reduce the 10% customs duties <\/strong>recently imposed on Egyptian goods<\/strong>,\u201d El Khatib told El Hadidi. He added that \u201cEgypt is working to lift customs restrictions not just on exports to the US, but also to the EU,\u201d a move El Khatib believes will improve the competitiveness of Egyptian exports. <\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s don\u2019t only present challenges however, according to El Khatib<\/strong>, who told El Hadidi that \u201cThe US tariffs present a very big window for Egypt, particularly in the readymade garments sector,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
