But the motivation behind this gusto isn\u2019t the paycheck, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2025\/03\/effort-paradox-hard-work\/682156\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">writes<\/a> the Atlantic, it\u2019s something hardwired into our brains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>(Tap or click the headline above to read this story with all of the links <\/strong>to external sources.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Case in point: <\/strong>In the final stretch of South Africa\u2019s blistering Comrades Marathon, the 12-hour mark signifies a cut-off that doesn\u2019t just mean the loss of a medal, but being stricken from the participation record of the 88 km race entirely. And yet every year, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/comrades.com\/race-info\/2024-entry-list\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">almost<\/a> 20k runners, 4k of which did not finish, flock to participate. This is just one example of what psychologist Michael Inzlicht calls the Effort Paradox \u2014 a seemingly irrational <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6172040\/#:~:text=According%20to%20prominent%20models%20in,effort%20can%20also%20add%20value.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">tendency<\/a> to value experiences precisely because they require an almost impossible amount of effort, not despite it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The economics of effort: <\/strong>Traditional economic models have long positioned excessive effort as an unambiguous negative. From Adam Smith\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.laphamsquarterly.org\/about-money\/toil-and-trouble\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">belief<\/a> that \u201ctoil and trouble\u201d subtracted from the value we might derive from the outcome in 1776 to Clark Hull\u2019s \u201claw of less work\u201d almost a century later, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/antilogicalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/principles-behavior.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">proposing<\/a> minimal effort as a kind of universal biological imperative, the common sentiment was that given the same outcome, people \u2014 and animals \u2014 would invariably choose the path of least resistance.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But our actual behavior tells a different story. <\/strong>In a well-documented phenomenon named the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/ris\/Publication%20Files\/11-091.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">IKEA effect<\/a>, we have observed that people value identical furniture more highly when they\u2019ve struggled through the assembly process themselves. But this pattern extends beyond Swedish furniture \u2014 we hike up mountains when we could take the cable car, struggle through video game puzzles when the answers are a Google search away, and run marathons when we can just\u2026 not.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why? <\/strong>Inzlicht\u2019s research points the finger at several interlocking psychological mechanisms, the first of which is the experiential gap between discomfort of exertion and the pleasure of achievement. The harder something was to do, the more pride you feel having done it. Another \u2014 slightly disconcerting \u2014 theory is that we\u2019ve conditioned ourselves to enjoy the suffering of hard work by anticipating the subsequent high of completing the task.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Organizational leaders should take note.<\/strong> While these strategies may seem counterintuitive, the Effort Paradox could be applied to how we manage our teams. How? Don\u2019t reflexively eliminate difficulty \u2014 properly calibrated challenges can be seen as value added rather than a friction point. Sometimes overcoming the obstacle, not eliminating it, is the point.
