<\/a> Egypt\u2019s b<\/strong>irth rates fell <\/strong>below the 2 mn mark for the first time since 2007<\/strong>, with 1.97 mn births recorded in 2024, according to a statement<\/a> from the Health Ministry. The figure for the year marks a 3.8% drop from the year before.<\/p>\n

FACT CHECK-<\/p>\n

No Emirati offer f<\/strong>or BMIC?<\/strong> State-owned South Valley Cement Company hasn\u2019t received any Emirati offers for its stake in Building Materials Industry Company (BMIC), it said in a disclosure to the EGX (pdf)<\/a>. The announcement follows a report from local media outlet Al Shorouk earlier this week that cited unnamed sources claiming that an unnamed Emirati company had submitted an offer<\/a> to acquire a controlling stake in BMIC in exchange for settling its EGP 4 bn outstanding debt.<\/p>\n

<\/a> The <\/strong>First Arab Fraud<\/a><\/strong>Combating Summit<\/a><\/strong> will take place between 21-23 February<\/strong> at Sharm El Sheikh\u2019s Savoy Hotel. THE BIG STORY ABROAD-<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s sweeping tariffs are still dominating the international press this morning,<\/strong> with the US facing retaliation from targeted countries and backlash from the global business community.<\/p>\n

Canada has responded with a first round of 25% tariffs <\/strong>on imports worth some USD 107 bn, including USD 20 bn worth of goods that will be impacted starting Tuesday. Canada plans to implement the duties on the remaining USD 86 bn \u2014 including passenger vehicles and steel as well as vegetables and dairy \u2014 in 21 days. Mexico also retaliated with 25% tariffs, without specifying which US goods will be targeted. Meanwhile, China plans to challenge the tariffs at the World Trade Organization, vowing to take unspecified \u201ccountermeasures.\u201d <\/p>\n

Will the European Union be pulled into the trade war soon? <\/strong>The EU also responded to Trump\u2019s statements that it would be \u201cabsolutely\u201d going to face tariffs \u201cpretty soon,\u201d saying that the bloc \u201cwould respond firmly to any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods.\u201d (FT<\/a> | The Guardian<\/a> | Reuters<\/a> | Bloomberg<\/a>)<\/p>\n

ALSO- Another drama series is unfolding over the Panama Canal:<\/strong> US Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanded that Panama must curb China\u2019s influence over the global shipping route or \u201cface immediate consequences\u201d in a conversation with Panamanian President Jos\u00e9 Ra\u00fal Mulino yesterday.
