ECONOMY-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gov\u2019t readies new social protection package:<\/strong> The Madbouly government\u2019s new social protection package that Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly teased at last week\u2019s presser will contain increases in the minimum wage, tax thresholds, social protection coverage, and pensions, two government sources told EnterpriseAM<\/a>. The package is expected to be approved by March or after receiving directives from the presidency, our sources said. The minimum wage hike has not yet been decided on, with our sources anticipating the government to raise the minimum wage by EGP 1k to EGP 7k, with adjustments for other income brackets. The Finance Ministry is looking into raising the personal income tax exemption threshold to EGP 65k \u2014 up from EGP 60k previously \u2014 while keeping other income brackets unchanged, our sources said.<\/p>\n

INVESTMENT-<\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- Organi Group is eyeing USD 1 bn in automotive and tourism investments over the <\/strong>next five years<\/strong>, CEO Essam Organi said on Wednesday<\/a>, with the big-ticket investment figure to be split evenly between the two sectors. The tourism sector\u2019s allotted USD 500 mn will go towards adding 20k rooms to the group\u2019s hotel portfolio, which currently stands at 4k rooms across 11 hotels in Egypt.<\/p>\n

Organi\u2019s comments came during the inauguration Auto Mobility's <\/strong>new USD 100 mn<\/a><\/strong>assembly<\/a><\/strong>plant<\/a><\/strong> for Chinese automaker Geely-branded vehicles, which was attended by much of the cabinet economic team.<\/p>\n

\n

#2- Spain\u2019s Konecta announced <\/strong>USD 100 mn<\/strong> worth of Egypt expansion plans:<\/strong> Madrid-based business process outsourcing (BPO) firm Konecta<\/a> announced this week that it would set up a regional HQ<\/a> and invest USD 100 mn in Egypt over the coming three years under an MoU inked with the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA). <\/p>\n

M&A-<\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- Arla Foods\u2019 deadline for submitting a purchase offer for Domty was extended by <\/strong>60<\/a><\/strong>working days<\/a><\/strong> starting 9 January<\/strong>, after the Financial Regulatory Authority greenlit Arla\u2019s request. Denmark-based Arla said last October that it wants to acquire up to 100% of local cheesemaker Domty\u2019s shares<\/a> for an estimated EGP 8.9 bn, with plans to delist the company from the EGX post-acquisition. <\/p>\n

#2- Raseedi acquired Kashat:<\/strong> Fintech startup Raseedi<\/a>acquired<\/a> nano-credit outfit Kashat<\/a> \u2014 as well as its subsidiary, nano-financial services provider Pharos Microfinance \u2014 for an undisclosed sum, in what the firm described as \u201can equity deal to broaden its product offerings and introduce instant loans\u201d to its portfolio.<\/p>\n

LEGISLATION-<\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- The House greenlit the government\u2019s cash-based subsidy law: <\/strong>The House of Representatives gave the final sign-off<\/a> to a government-drafted law that directs cash-5 based subsidies to citizens who fall below the poverty line and lack access to social ins. initiatives. The law stipulates forming the Takaful and Karama fund to distribute these payments.<\/p>\n

MPs also approved a government-drafted bill to delay the tax on agricultural land<\/strong> by a year, effective 31 July 2024. The postponement aims to ease financial pressures on farmers and boost production.<\/p>\n

\n

\n

#2- GAFI to draft a new Companies Act in line with changing investment climate:<\/strong> The General Authority for Investment and Freezones (GAFI) announced that it plans to prepare<\/a> a revamped companies law to replace the Companies Act as part of efforts to keep up with developments in the investment arena and to provide a legislative framework that aligns with the increasing reliance on electronic documents. The authority is expected to put the draft legislation up for public consultation after Ramadan.<\/p>\n

DEBT-<\/p>\n

<\/strong>MAFI secured USD 180 mn for its <\/strong>agri-food industrial complex<\/a><\/strong> in <\/strong>Sadat City.<\/strong> The agro-industrial firm will receive USD 108 mn in long-term financing from a syndicate of local banks led by state-owned Banque Misr and including Suez Canal Bank and Al Baraka Bank, and USD 72 mn bridged by equity investments from regional investors. Beltone Investment Banking is MAFI\u2019s sole financial advisor and lead financial coordinator for the agreement.<\/p>\n

MOVES-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hazem Helal (<\/strong>LinkedIn<\/a><\/strong>) was <\/strong>appointed<\/a><\/strong> CEO of O West, Makadi Heights, and Byoum by <\/strong>Orascom Development<\/strong>, the company announced in a statement on Wednesday. Helal steps into the role after serving as vice chairman of Al Ahly Sports Facilities Company, where he led the development of a new stadium and sports city.<\/p>\n

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS- <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The biggest news by far this week was the long-awaited and much-welcome <\/strong>announcement that a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel had been reached.<\/strong> After 15 months of a brutal war and tens of thousands of Palestinians killed by Israel\u2019s brutal assault on the enclave, Israel and Hamas agreed to an Egyptian, Qatari, and US mediated ceasefire<\/a> on Wednesday, with the agreement set to come into effect on Sunday, 19 January. <\/p>\n

According to the plan, the ceasefire will begin with a six-week first phase that will include <\/strong>a gradual Israeli troop withdrawal from central Gaza<\/strong>, allowing displaced Palestinians to return to northern areas. Hamas will release hostages over the course of the phase, with at least three released each week and all living hostages freed before the return of remains. Next, the two parties will move on to the yet-to-be-finalized second and third phases of the agreement, which will focus on securing a permanent truce and full Israeli withdrawal in the second phase and facilitating Gaza\u2019s reconstruction in the third phase.<\/p>\n

However, questions about whether the ceasefire would actually take effect began to crop <\/strong>up Thursday<\/strong>, as Israeli strikes continued to pound Gaza<\/a> into the afternoon. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who has long played the role of spoiler in ceasefire negotiations, began the day claiming that Hamas had gone back on several key tenets of the agreement, with the PM threatening to put off convening Israel\u2019s cabinet until Hamas had \u201caccepted all elements of the agreement.\u201d. Netenyahu\u2019s office later announced that the cabinet will meet today to give final approval to the ceasefire and hostages release agreement. Netanyahu remains under pressure from two of his coalition parties to scuttle the agreement, with several lawmakers threatening to resign if the ceasefire goes through.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the world<\/strong>, South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol was arrested<\/a> by security forces after over a month of tense political uncertainty in the nation following Yoon\u2019s brief declaration of martial law in early December. US president Joe Biden, meanwhile, bid farewell to the White House in an Oval Office speech Wednesday, where he warned<\/a> of an emerging tech-industrial complex that has brought an \u201cavalanche of misinformation and disinformation, enabling the abuse of power.\"<\/p>\n
