In a <\/strong>Washington Times<\/a><\/strong> op-ed, Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty called for an <\/strong>independent Palestinian state as part of a two-state solution<\/strong>, urging the international community to support Palestinian self-determination. The FM condemned Israel\u2019s \u201ccontinued occupation, annexation, targeted assassinations, use of force and uninterrupted construction of illegal settlements across the occupied Palestinian territories with constant acts of violence from settlers,\u201d saying that Israel\u2019s \u201cshortsighted and misguided approach\u201d to guaranteeing its security through the use of force had not and would not yield results. <\/p>\n

The only solution<\/strong>, Abdelatty stressed, is one that addresses the occupation\u2019s root causes by providing Palestinians with hope and dignity through sovereign self-rule. He highlighted Egypt\u2019s role in Middle East peace efforts, calling on the international community to continue pursuing the two-state solution so as to \u201cspare future Palestinian and Israeli generations the scourge of war and terror.\u201d<\/p>\n
