<\/a> Mohamed El-Erian is not buying the concerns raised on the EGP potentially<\/strong> \u201ccorrecting\u201d<\/strong> in the piece by the Financial Times<\/a> we led with yesterday<\/a>. \u201cThis sharp appreciation of 14% is leading some \u2014 including the financial institution quoted in the article \u2014 to warn of a subsequent depreciation. But do such predictions take into account what, by most measures, was a large initial overshoot back in November?<\/strong>\u201d he asks in a Facebook post<\/a>. \u201cRather than point to the high probability of renewed currency depreciation,\u201d he explains, \u201cwhat may well be taking place is a process of price discovery in which the Pound is iterating closer to its \u2018equilibrium level<\/strong>.\u2019\u201d El-Erian is still unhappy with the fixation on the currency. \u201cIt is also important to stress that the currency is neither the cause of, nor the unique solution to Egypt\u2019s economic challenges.\u201d What matters most, he says, \u201cis a policy reform approach that unleashes the country\u2019s considerable growth potential and improves the focus on social sectors, including protecting the most vulnerable segments of society.\u201d Hear, hear, sir.<\/p>\n

\u2026That said, the end of the \u201choneymoon period\u201d for the EGP might be nigh<\/strong>, Ahmed Namatalla and Ahmed Feteha write for Bloomberg<\/a>. They say Egypt could be burdened by its own success as \u201cforeign investors, who had been almost the sole buyers at Egypt\u2019s local treasury bill auctions earlier this month, were absent for two straight sales.\u201d While some fund managers remain wary of current treasury yields and the EGP\u2019s latest surge, Capital Economics\u2019 Jason Tuvey expects the EGP to appreciate to EGP 14 per USD 1. He says \u201cyields on treasury bills are very attractive, especially since there does seem to be a shift within the government toward more orthodox policy making.\u201d Still, with mostly Egyptian banks buying treasuries on Sunday and Thursday, yields climbed by more than 100 bps.<\/p>\n
