Scott <\/strong><strong>Fitzgerald<\/strong><\/a><strong> that mocks what could be now labelled \u201cfake news\u201d from the 1920s<\/strong>. The I.O.U. is a story about a narrator, the story\u2019s protagonist, who is about to publish a nonfiction book about a man communicating with his dead nephew in the spirit world, when he meets the nephew in question on a train as he was given \u201cthe most intelligent-looking\u201d passengers a copy of the book to review. The story\u2019s opening paragraph includes the lines, read by the narrator: \u201cAll the columnists and communists (I can never get these two words straight) abuse me because they say I want money. I do \u2014 I want it terribly. My wife needs it. My children use it all the time. If someone offered me all the money in New York I should not refuse it. I would rather bring out a book that had an advance sale of five hundred thousand copies than have discovered Samuel Butler, Theodore Dreiser, and James Branch Cabell in one year. So would you if you were a publisher.\u201d Thu-Huong Ha writes in <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/931122\/f-scott-fitzgerald-new-yorker-publishes-short-story-the-i-o-u-after-nearly-100-years\/\">Quartz<\/a>: \u201cFitzgerald\u2019s story is well timed for today\u2019s atmosphere of media distrust, where the line between fact and fiction is increasingly blurred by presidents and publishers alike.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>This exchange between the narrator and the \u201cdead nephew\u201d stands out in particular:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is fiction!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a sense\u2014\u201d I admitted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a sense? It is fiction! It fulfills all the requirements of fiction: it is one long sweet lie. Would you call it fact?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d I replied calmly. \u201cI should call it nonfiction.
