Inji Efflatoun\u2019s legacy is equal parts artistic and political.<\/strong> Born in 1924 to an upper-class Egyptian family, she actively advocated for women\u2019s rights and subscribed to Communist ideologies that both fueled her groundbreaking painting style and landed her in prison under Gamal Abdel Nasser\u2019s rule. Inspired by<\/a> \u201cthe social reality of the people of the Egyptian working class,\u201d Efflatoun produced a number of \u201cexistentialist, psychologically charged\u201d works throughout her younger years as a surrealist artist.
