To get things started this morning, we have some free association for you on social media (personal and for your business), Generation Z and fintech\u2026<\/p>\n

Are you worried about what a border guard can see of your social media profile? <\/strong>Or maybe you don\u2019t want your boss (or underlings) to see certain photos you\u2019re sharing with your BFF? Gizmodo has a good guide to \u201cHow to Make Your Social Media Accounts as Private as Possible<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d which covers Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Note the qualifier here: \u201cas private as possible.\u201d The best way to maintain your privacy? Ditch social media entirely, if only because when a product is free, you\u2019re the product that\u2019s being sold.<\/p>\n

Still insisting your company should be on social media? <\/strong>We could (and have) made impassioned arguments for why that\u2019s not the case. But if you must \u2014 and if you\u2019re in finance \u2014 go read Tearsheet\u2019s \u201cHow finance brands use Instagram<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d Hint: It\u2019s not to publicize their earnings releases or the last transaction they closed, but to engage with retail customers and to recruit new talent.<\/p>\n

And before we get off the subject of Instagram: <\/strong>Bloomberg has an interesting look at how \u201c<\/strong>Instagram Killed the Retail Store<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d <\/strong>suggesting that the kids in Gen Z are \u201crewriting the rules of selling fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

While you\u2019re on Tearsheet, go read about how \u201cRBC is using video conferencing to bring the human touch back to banking<\/a>,\u201d which the site says (speaking the blatantly obvious) \u201ccould be a sign of an emerging consensus that digital banking may always require some form of human connection<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fintech drama: <\/strong>Then hop over to the New York Times\u2019 Dealbook<\/a>, where Nathaniel Popper has a great profile of Renaud Laplanche, the fintech entrepreneur who founded and led what was then the world\u2019s largest peer-to-peer lender \u2014 Lending Club<\/a> \u2014 to IPO<\/a> and was ousted by his own board<\/a>. He briefly plotted a hostile takeover<\/a>, and now he\u2019s back with Upgrade, a new platform that will compete head-to-head with Lending Club (where he still owns stock). It\u2019s his first interview since he was booted. We\u2019re going to be following this saga for some time.<\/p>\n

Gen Z, by the way, is still not a \u201cset\u201d thing.<\/strong> The generation of kids that follows the millennials is generally accepted as being those born between 1994 and 2014, but we\u2019ve seen date ranges shifted a few years in each direction. The New York Times had a nice piece a couple of years back that looks at the hallmarks of the \u201cnext big thing for market researchers, cultural observers and trend forecasters<\/a>\u201d (it defines them as kids born 1996-2010 against millennials born 1980-1995). Google recently released a paper headlined \u201cIt\u2019s lit: A guide to what teens think is cool<\/strong><\/a>\u201d including favourite technologies, pastimes, celebrities, and brands. What are the favourite brands of today\u2019s teams? <\/strong>Youtube, Netflix, Google, Xbox and Oreos are the top five.<\/p>\n

On, and speaking of tech: Android is now officially (by a hair) the world\u2019s most <\/strong>popular operating system<\/strong> with internet users across the globe, edging out Windows with a 37.93% market share in March against Microsoft\u2019s 37.91%, according to CNET<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
