On the morning of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi\u2019s meeting with US President Donald Trump, the foreign press has been preoccupied with the Court of Urgent Matter\u2019s ruling in favor of the Tiran and Sanafir handover to Saudi Arabia<\/strong>, topping coverage from the likes of Bloomberg<\/a>, the BBC<\/a>, and of course, Al Jazeera<\/a>. Look for that balance to flip by tomorrow morning.<\/p>\n

The barrage of foreign press coverage of El Sisi\u2019s trip to the US continues in preparation <\/strong>for his meeting with US President Donald Trump today<\/strong>. Setting the tone in the US press: The inimitable Hamza Hendawi\u2019s piece for the Associated Press (\u201cIn DC visit, Egypt's el-Sissi to test 'chemistry' with Trump<\/a>\u201d) and Tarek El-Tablawy\u2019s filing for Bloomberg (\u201cEl-Sisi may find kindred spirit in Trump in anti-Islamist fight<\/a>\u201d). Cairo and Washington are \u201cexpected to reach accord on enhanced collaboration in the fight against radical Islamist terrorism<\/strong>,\u201d Peter Heinlein writes in Voice of America<\/a>. \u201cTrump would rather stand with a strongman against terrorism and Islamism than concern himself with Egypt\u2019s domestic challenges \u2014 or US values at stake,\u201d Daniel Benaim, senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, tells The Guardian\u2019s Ruth Michaelson<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Military aid and the situation in Sinai will also be on the table<\/strong>, veteran military analyst Robert Springborg tells Michaelson: \u201cThe US military has long been pushing Egypt to \u2018go light and mobile\u2019 \u2026 The counter-terrorism campaign in the Sinai and in Egypt proper has not achieved its objectives, due largely to harsh methods, poor intelligence and the drivers of discontent intensifying. Amr Hamzawy writes that \u201cEgypt's new authoritarianism has exacerbated societal divisions by systematically propagating alternative facts\u201d in a piece for Al Jazeera<\/a>. The same unoriginal point is echoed in a statement from Human Rights Watch<\/a>.
