We Homo sapiens have a new cousin, and the back-story is awesome. <\/strong>A recently discovered species \u2014 Homo naledi \u2014 may have walked the earth earlier than before thought: at the same time as our direct ancestors did. Their features \u201cseemed modern, almost human \u2026 but their brains were as small as a gorilla\u2019s.\u201d Oh, and they may also have been burying their dead.<\/strong> The National Geographic<\/a> has a deep dive into the news for you anthropology geeks out there, and its fall 2015 cover story dives deeper into how Homo naledi could change our view of our own evolution<\/a>. The Washington Post<\/a> also does a good job of digging into the debate over whether the Naledi was burying its dead, noting that, \u201cRitual disposal of the dead is an advanced behavior, suggesting that a species was capable of symbolic thought<\/strong> and saw itself as separate from the natural world.
