The safety of Meta\u2019s Ray-Ban smart glasses has been called into question after <\/strong>two Harvard students <\/strong>revealed<\/a><\/strong> how easily they can be used to invade your privacy. <\/strong>Their program, called I-XRAY<\/a>, showed that the smart glasses can pair with facial recognition tech to access people\u2019s personal information on the spot, The Verge<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n

How?<\/strong> Videos livestreamed through Meta\u2019s glasses onto Instagram are fed through a program that uses AI to identify faces. The system then cross-references the images with public databases, and can be used to pull up personal information \u2014 addresses, phone numbers, emails, the whole shabang \u2014 and onto the user\u2019s phone\u2026 All in a matter of seconds.<\/p>\n

The facial recognition search engine used to uncover people\u2019s identities is available to <\/strong>literally anyone.<\/strong> In 2022, The New York Times called<\/a> the search engine, PimEyes, \u201calarmingly accurate,\u201d made more concerning by its accessibility. And because Meta\u2019s glasses are made to look just like any other pair of mundane Ray-Bans, people won\u2019t be able to tell when they\u2019re being recorded.<\/p>\n

Meta has (unsuccessfully) tried to side-step privacy issues. <\/strong>Even though the company is urging users to respect others' privacy, the rules<\/a> of wearable tech etiquette are only as effective as people\u2019s willingness to follow them. And even with Meta adding a \u201cprivacy light\u201d to signal when the user is recording, it\u2019s practically invisible to the naked eye in broad daylight, says The Verge, making it practically useless.
