MbS takes over Mohamed bin Nayef\u2019s cabinet positions<\/strong>: Newly appointed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is taking over from his cousin, former crown prince Mohammed bin Nayef, as the kingdom\u2019s deputy prime minister and interior minister, according to an official Saudi Press Agency statement<\/a>. The new crown prince\u2019s meteoric rise to power over the past several months made the <\/strong>announcement of his new position expected<\/strong>, but \u201cthe timing was a surprise, and puts the kingdom\u2019s future in relatively untested hands,\u201d considering KSA\u2019s tensions with Qatar and Iran, and its ongoing war in Yemen, Reuters says<\/a>. The move also has internal repercussions for the kingdom, including the marginalization of \u201ca large cadre of older princes, many with foreign educations and decades of government experience the younger prince lacks,\u201d the NYT\u2019s Ben Hubbard notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump called MbS yesterday to discuss \u201cthe priority of cutting off <\/strong>all support for terrorists and extremists\u201d<\/strong> and efforts to resolve Arab countries\u2019 spat with Qatar, according to a White House statement<\/a>. Trump and bin Salman also talked economic cooperation during the call.
