The hike \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2016\/11\/04\/breaking-news-egypt-to-cut-fuel-subsidies-raise-price-of-petrol-at-the-pumps\/\">third for fuel products since July<\/a> 2014 \u2014 comes following <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/06\/21\/sisi-raises-food-subsidy-allowances-to-egp-50-from-egp-21-alongside-handful-of-social-safety-measures\/\">a slew of measures<\/a> enacted before the Eid break meant to strengthen the social safety net, including raises to pensions and ration card allocations. Fuel prices <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1155410\">as of last Thursday<\/a> are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>95 octane petrol<\/strong> at the pumps will now cost <strong>EGP 6.60 per liter<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/338370\/59\/%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%AC%D9%84----%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AD%D9%83%D9%88%D9%85%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D9%82%D8%B1-%D8%B2%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A3%D8%B3%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%88%D9%82%D9%88%D8%AF\">up by 5.6%<\/a> from EGP 6.25;<\/li>\n<li><strong>92 octane petrol<\/strong> rose by 43% to <strong>EGP 5.00 per liter<\/strong> from EGP 3.50 per liter;<\/li>\n<li><strong>80 octane petrol<\/strong> increased by 55% to <strong>EGP 3.65 per liter<\/strong> from EGP 2.35;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diesel fuel<\/strong> will also sell for <strong>EGP 3.65 per liter<\/strong>, up from EGP 2.35 before;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kerosene <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/338378\/59\/%D9%87%D9%8A%D8%A6%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%84-%D8%A3%D8%B3%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D9%88%D9%82%D9%88%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B5%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%A9-%D8%AB%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%AA%D8%A9-%D8%B9%D8%AF%D8%A7-%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B2%D9%88%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B3%D9%85%D9%86%D8%AA\">as well rose<\/a> to <strong>EGP 3.65 per liter<\/strong> from EGP 2.35;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooking gas cylinders<\/strong> doubled in price to reach <strong>EGP 30<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gas cylinders for commercial use<\/strong> also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/338374\/14\/%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%81%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AF---%D8%A3%D8%B3%D8%B7%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8%D9%88%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%AC%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%AC%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D9%82%D9%81%D8%B2-%D9%84%D9%8060-%D8%AC%D9%86%D9%8A%D9%87%D9%8B%D8%A7\">doubled in price<\/a> to reach <strong>EGP 60<\/strong>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compressed natural gas for automobiles<\/strong> rose by 25% to <strong>EGP 2 per cubic meter<\/strong> from EGP 1.60;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Natural gas for households<\/strong> increased to between <strong>EGP 1 per cubic meter and EGP 2.25<\/strong> depending on one\u2019s consumption tier;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cement factories<\/strong> will also be paying a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/egypt-economy-idUSL8N1JQ1G5\">paying a higher price<\/a> of <strong>EGP 3.5k per tonne of fuel oil (mazot)<\/strong> compared to EGP 2.5k previously. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The price of natural gas to industry will remain unchanged<\/strong>, according to a report from the Cabinet Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC). The report also states bus, metro, and railway tickets, will not rise, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shorouknews.com\/news\/view.aspx?cdate=01072017&id=8e70e217-7b43-4162-bfb9-427a452617d0\">according to Al Shorouk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact of the hike:<\/strong> Inflation, already at around 31.1%, <strong>is expected to accelerate 4-5%<\/strong> after this latest reduction of fuel subsidies, said the Prime Minister,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-06-29\/egypt-raises-fuel-prices-as-government-pushes-painful-overhaul\">according to Bloomberg.<\/a> According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capmas.gov.eg\/Admin\/News\/PressRelease\/2017629145440_fuel2017.pdf\">a CAPMAS report (pdf)<\/a>, transportation costs will rise 5-15%<strong>. <\/strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/338491\/58\/%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%81%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B1%D9%83%D9%88%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%AF%D8%A9-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D9%8A%D8%B2%D8%A9-%D8%A8%D8%B9%D8%AF-%D8%AA%D8%AD%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%83-%D8%A3%D8%B3%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A8%D9%86%D8%B2%D9%8A%D9%86-%20\">governorates of Giza<\/a> and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/338490\/54\/%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%A7%D9%81%D8%B8-%D9%85%D8%B7%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%AD-%D9%8A%D8%B9%D8%AA%D9%85%D8%AF-%D8%AA%D8%B9%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%81%D8%A9-%D8%AC%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%AF%D8%A9-%D9%84%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%AC%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%A8%D8%B9%D8%AF-%D8%AA%D8%AD%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%83-%D8%A3%D8%B3%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%88%D9%82%D9%88%D8%AF\">Marsa Matrouh<\/a> have already allowed taxi fares to officially increase, while drivers in Cairo and elsewhere have been unilaterally raising prices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reactions to the price the hikes coming from the IMF were positive.<\/strong> \u201cThe fuel price increases, together with the higher social spending already announced, will help the budget while protecting the poor,\u201d Chris Jarvis, the IMF\u2019s mission chief to Egypt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-06-29\/egypt-raises-fuel-prices-as-government-pushes-painful-overhaul\">told Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The private sector appears to have taken the move in stride<\/strong>, with the FEI noting that the move will have a marginal effect costs in most industries, but are vital to economic reform efforts, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/338468\/14\/%D8%A7%D8%AA%D8%AD%D8%A7%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B5%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%B1%D9%81%D8%B9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D8%B9%D9%85-%D8%B9%D9%86-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%88%D9%82%D9%88%D8%AF-%D8%B6%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B1%D8%A9---%D9%88%D8%AA%D8%A3%D8%AB%D9%8A%D8%B1%D9%87-%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%AF%D9%88%D8%AF\">according to Al Mal<\/a>. Rep. Mortada El Araby announced he will submit his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/338466\/19\/%D8%A8%D8%B1%D9%84%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A-%D9%8A%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%86-%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%87-%D8%B1%D9%81%D8%B6%D8%A7-%D9%84%D8%B1%D9%81%D8%B9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%88%D9%82%D9%88%D8%AF\">resignation on Tuesday<\/a> in protest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The private sector will adjust pricing <\/strong>as a result of fuel price rises at the same time as the value-added tax rises to 14% from 13%. Cuts to fuel subsidies will make it 3% more expensive to produce food, said an official at the Federation of Egyptian Industries\u2019 (FEI) food industries division.
