Men who do not receive a college education leave the workforce at higher rates than those who do. \u201cThe big impacts are on the non-college-educated groups on their ability to enter and stay in the labor market,\u201d said Jeff Strohl, a director of the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown University. So why isn\u2019t the rate steady? The number of men enrolling in college has been dropping over the past decade.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Higher education is becoming less and less appealing. <\/strong>More people are electing not to attend university to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/american-men-dont-want-work-anymore-1897567\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">avoid<\/a> student loans, which often leave Americans in debt for close to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/educationdata.org\/average-time-to-repay-student-loans#:~:text=25%25%20of%20borrowers%20are%20on,pay%20off%20their%20student%20loans.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">20<\/a> years. Interest rates on these loans have risen by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consumerfinance.gov\/about-us\/blog\/high-interest-rates-set-to-increase-the-cost-of-student-loans-in-2024\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">44%<\/a> in just five years. Gen Z undergraduates are now embracing the NEET lifestyle \u2014 Not in Employment, Education, or Training \u2014 and research shows that men are more likely than women to do so.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Experts are concerned. <\/strong>\u201cThe long-term decline in labor force participation by so-called prime-age men is a tremendous worry for our society, our economy, and probably our political system,\u201d said Nicholas Eberstadt, a political economist at the American Enterprise Institute. In fact, the global employment-to-population ratio has been steadily declining since Y2K. Over the last 24 years, the employment rate has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1337130\/global-employment-rate\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">dropped<\/a> from almost 5%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>OpenAI doesn\u2019t want users poking around to see what its latest AI model is <\/strong><strong>\u201cthinking\u201d. <\/strong>Since <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/introducing-openai-o1-preview\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">launching<\/a> the new Strawberry AI model family last week, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Open AI<\/a> has been on high alert, sending warning emails and threatening bans to anyone who dares to look too close, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/openai-threatens-bans-as-users-probe-o1-model\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Wired<\/a> reports. When it comes to their shiny new o1-preview and o1-mini models, they\u2019d prefer to keep the secrets under wraps.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What\u2019s the big deal? <\/strong>Unlike previous models, this one is designed to think through problems in a step-by-step manner \u2014 like in your math exams where you have to break down how you got your answer. Cool, right? Here\u2019s the twist: When you ask ChatGPT the question, you don\u2019t actually get to see the breakdown \u2014 instead, OpenAI hides it, giving you a filtered version cleaned up by a second AI. This is what piqued hackers and AI enthusiasts\u2019 interest, who are now racing to find out o1\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/learning-to-reason-with-llms\/#hiding-the-chains-of-thought\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">raw chain of thought<\/a> by using <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/me-en.kaspersky.com\/resource-center\/definitions\/what-is-jailbreaking\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">jailbreaks<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prompt injections<\/a> \u2014 some have had luck but nothing concrete has surfaced yet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But OpenAI is watching. <\/strong>If anyone dares to ask for the model\u2019s deduction methods \u2014 even the term \u201creasoning trace\u201d is flagged \u2014, you might end up getting a stern email from the company.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why the gatekeeping? <\/strong>OpenAI argues that these hidden chains of thought allow them to better monitor the model for any shady behavior \u2014 just in case AI gets too smart and starts getting manipulative. There's also the other case of not giving too much away to competitors \u2014 AI researchers love to train rival models using <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2023\/12\/elon-musks-ai-bot-grok-speaks-as-if-made-by-openai-in-some-tests-causing-a-stir\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI\u2019s outputs<\/a> (even though it\u2019s against their terms), and raw reasoning data would be a goldmine for anyone looking to create a knockoff version.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember: OpenAI was founded with the promise of being an open source model to <\/strong><strong>make AI accessible to everyone.<\/strong> It\u2019s even in the name. The more the revolutionary tech inflates, the more the company is keeping its code under wraps. Tech titan and chronically online internet troll Elon Musk, who co-founded the company with Sam Altman back in 2015, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/article\/2024\/aug\/05\/elon-musk-openai-lawsuit\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sued<\/a> OpenAI for abandoning their original mission, claiming that they misled him and other backers. The company responded in a long <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/openai-elon-musk\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">blog post<\/a> that contained several emails showing that not only was Musk aware of their gameplay, but that he was on board with it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Is OpenAI being hypocritical? <\/strong>OpenAI has built its models by hoovering up information from across the internet, scraping user data without consent or unlawfully using copyrighted material.
