Amr<\/strong> Adib\u2019s interview with UN Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Agenda<\/strong> and IMF Executive Director Mahmoud Mohieldin stood out on last night\u2019s talk show circuit,<\/strong> alongside coverage of Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Lt. Gen. Ahmed Fathy Khalifa\u2019s visit to the border with Gaza.<\/p>\n

Has<\/strong> the Egyptian economy emerged from the bottleneck after Ras El Hekma? <\/strong>\u201cThe Egyptian economy got a breather following the agreement and the IMF\u2019s approval of the first and second reviews of Egypt\u2019s USD 8 bn loan program, alongside the investment and trade agreement signed with the EU. It's possible to build upon this chance until the situation stabilizes and citizens begin to feel the effect of these positive changes,\u201d Mohieldin said (watch, runtime: 55:34<\/a>). \u201cThe country needs several things to build upon this chance and move forward, including boosting investment and exports and reducing the debt service bill, which will prevent Egypt from needing to return to the IMF again,\u201d Mohieldin added, noting that \u201cEgypt\u2019s relationship with the IMF, which began in 2016 and will end in 2026, will be successful in line with the IMF\u2019s expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA<\/strong> complete state exit from the market may take decades, and until this full exit is<\/strong> completed, no one will be allowed privileges at the expense of another,\u201d<\/strong> Mohieldin said. \u201cAll private, Arab, or foreign companies in Egypt, as well as public sector companies, should be subject to a competitive system, meaning that the private sector is able to compete with state-owned companies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mohieldin<\/strong> also expressed his support for the government\u2019s plan to replace in-kind<\/strong> subsidies with <\/strong>cash-based subsidies<\/a><\/strong>, saying that \u201cEgypt has the infrastructure under the Communications Ministry to identify beneficiaries by name, address, and phone number.\u201d Mohieldin pointed to Brazil\u2019s successful establishment of an integrated system for distributing cash-based subsidies to the actual beneficiaries, a program he said Egypt could learn from.<\/p>\n

AND- Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces Lt. Gen. Ahmed Fathy Khalifa\u2019s <\/strong>visit<\/a><\/strong> to the Gaza<\/strong> border featured prominently on the airwaves<\/strong>, including on Ahmed Moussa\u2019s program on Ala Mas\u2019ouleety, with Moussa saying that that \u201cthe visit is a message to anyone that thinks of infringing upon Egypt\u2019s sovereignty as well as a message of reassurance to the Egyptian people\u201d (watch, runtime: 2:24<\/a>). \u201cEgypt is capable of deterrence, but maintains peace,\u201d Moussa added, noting that \u201cno one dares to threaten Egypt\u2019s national security, not even Israel\u201d (watch, runtime: 2:33<\/a>). Moussa also hosted former head of military intelligence Nasr Salem, who noted that \u201cIsrael\u2019s desire to maintain its forces in the Philadelphi Corridor means adding fuel to the fire\u201d (watch, runtime: 31:30<\/a>).<\/p>\n

In context:<\/strong> Lt. Gen. Khalifa\u2019s visit comes amid a sharp uptick in tensions between Egypt and Israel following the latter\u2019s insistence<\/a> on maintaining its forces in the Philadelphi Corridor on the border between Egypt and Gaza, despite Cairo\u2019s strenuous objections.
