The 20 shipments are expected to be delivered from October through December, with the tender set to close on 12 September.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And it looks like they will continue after this: <\/strong>\u201cWe will need to import another 17-20 shipments in 1Q 2025,\u201d the source added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We weren\u2019t expecting LNG imports to continue for such a long time: <\/strong>The government originally laid out a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/454b221a-69a5-4435-864e-86f3fc55f90e\/government-pledges-to-end-power-cuts-by-third-week-of-july-with-usd-1.2-bn-set-aside-for%253cmark%253e-energy%253c%2Fmark%253e-imports-and-other-initiatives\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 1.2 bn plan<\/a> to import fuel to power energy plants to bridge the supply gap until the end of summer, and made orders to import around 21 shipments of LNG with the assumption that demand will decline during winter and there will be no need to import until the weather starts heating up again next year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember: <\/strong>Power cuts <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/8883e2e1-8006-4fd6-be3c-58d871338ead\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">are set to return next week<\/a> after an eight-week hiatus, before ending for good by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Imports at this time are rather uncommon for Egypt:<\/strong> \u201cEgypt has really been the surprise on the global LNG market,\u201d Columbia University researcher Anne-Sophie Corbeau told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-09-05\/egypt-seeks-to-import-lng-for-winter-as-its-gas-output-plunges\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>. \u201cThe production has totally collapsed. This is the problem, and there is no way around that: either you reduce demand or you increase net imports.\u201d Egypt\u2019s extended demand for LNG caused a rise in European natural gas prices, which rose as much as 4% on Friday, the business news service added.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The move isn\u2019t just about filling a supply gap: <\/strong>The government apparently resorted to this solution to avoid two potential problems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Any possible arbitration claims from liquefaction plant operators:<\/strong> The government will direct more of the local gas production to the two liquefaction plants in Idku and Damietta, while directing more LNG imports for local consumption. This should help avoid any possible arbitration claims by the liquefaction plants\u2019 operators after the quantities of gas supplied to them declined recently.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keeping foreign energy players happy so the investments keep coming in: <\/strong>The government will direct more domestic natural gas production to export and will allocate the export proceeds to international oil companies as part of the government\u2019s efforts to encourage new foreign investments and pay arrears owed to the foreign companies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>On the topic of restarting LNG exports:<\/strong> The government is planning to resume gas supplies to its Idku plant as early as 4Q 2024, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asharqbusiness.com\/economics\/53045\/%D8%A5%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%A9-%D8%B6%D8%AE-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%BA%D8%A7%D8%B2-%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AD%D8%B7%D8%A9-%D8%A5%D8%AF%D9%83%D9%88-%D9%84%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%B5%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%B1-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B1%D8%A8%D8%B9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%B9\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asharq Business<\/a> reports, citing a source from Shell \u2014 a shareholder in the Idku plant.
