He attributed the USD 4.7 bn net gain to both foreign inflows, which came in at USD 3.7 bn, and the banking system drawing in USD 4 bn. Egypt received a USD 1.25 bn tranche <a href=\"http:\/\/ara.reuters.com\/article\/businessNews\/idARAKBN1AH4D9\">from the IMF loan in July<\/a>. The previous peak in central bank reserves was in December 2010, closing that month at USD 36.005 bn. Reserves <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/egypt-cenbank-reserves-idUSL5N1KN56G\">had dropped to a low<\/a> of USD 19 bn in October of 2016, right before the EGP float the following month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEgypt\u2019s reserves now cover almost eight months of imports<\/strong>, which adds credibility to the new currency regime,\u201d CI Capital economist Hany Farahat tells <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-08-01\/egypt-s-net-foreign-reserves-surge-to-record-high-in-july\">Bloomberg\u2019s Ahmed Feteha<\/a>. The data show that Egypt is able to attract strong inflows, \u201cimplying the country\u2019s currency problems are almost over,\u201d he said. <strong>Prime Minister Sherif Ismail said the reserve level \u201cmeans that the Egyptian economy has recovered,\u201d <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2017\/08\/01\/world\/middleeast\/ap-ml-egypt-economy-.html\">the Associated Press reports<\/a>. Uhm\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>More than USD 13 bn has flowed into Egyptian T-Bills as of July 25<\/strong>, with yields soaring over 22 percent, according to Bloomberg. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/341916\/14\/%D9%83%D8%AC%D9%88%D9%83--3-5-%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AD%D8%AC%D9%85-%D8%A7%D9%83%D8%AA%D8%AA%D8%A7%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%AC%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%A8-%D8%A8%D9%85%D8%AD%D9%81%D8%B8%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%86-%D9%81%D9%89-%D9%8A%D9%88%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%88\">Foreigners snapped up debt<\/a> totalling USD 3.5 bn in July. Most of the inflows go into the CBE\u2019s repatriation fund, which backs expedited transfers of funds for foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p>Capital Economics, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/research.cdn.capitaleconomics.com\/1bacd5\/strains-in-qatars-markets-ease.pdf\">says in a research note (pdf)<\/a> that <strong>the CBE \u201chas also been <\/strong><strong>intervening in the foreign exchange market to prevent the EGP from appreciating<\/strong>, in the process rebuilding its FX reserves. This upwards pressure on the currency appears to be related to a jump in capital inflows, which we think it is likely to be temporary. Indeed, foreigners\u2019 net purchases of Egyptian equities, which jumped immediately after the devaluation of the EGP late last year, have now started to fall.\u201d As a result, the firm expects the EGP \u201c<strong>to weaken modestly against the USD over the next few years<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026All of this comes as World Bank Egypt Country Director Asad Alam said Egypt\u2019s <\/strong><strong>economic reforms are improving the country\u2019s competitiveness<\/strong> and attracting new investments, <a href=\"https:\/\/alborsanews.com\/2017\/08\/01\/1041291\">according to Al Borsa<\/a>. Alam says the central bank and government have achieved tangible successes in improving the business climate domestically and that the private sector is starting to see benefits from the reforms to energy policy and new legislation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Central bank reserves are at their highest level ever.
