ON THIS DAY- <\/strong>On this day in 1959, the Soviet Union launched Luna 2, the first man-made object to land on another celestial body, after it landed on the moon the next day. Luna 2 was the second spacecraft launched as part of the Luna program and carried<\/a> \u201cequipment to measure, among other things, the magnetic fields of the Earth and the Moon and the belts of radiation surrounding the earth.\u201d In France, a collection of prehistoric cave paintings, known as the Lascaux cave paintings, were discovered in 1940. The 15,000-17,000 year-old paintings depict<\/a> \u201cnumerous types of animals, including horses, red deer, stags, bovines, felines, and what appear to be mythical creatures.\u201d Also on this day, music icon Johnny Cash died in 2003 and the US declared war on terror in 2001.
