<\/a> The conversation on Egypt in the global press is being dominated by <\/strong>Human Rights Watch report<\/strong><\/a> that claims the nation\u2019s security services \u201croutinely\u201d torture political detainees. The story is getting wide pick-up by the wires<\/a> as well as The Guardian<\/a>, CNN<\/a>, the BBC<\/a>, Vice<\/a> and Ireland\u2019s Independent<\/a>, among many others. The report alleges torture is \u201cwidespread and systematic\u201d and could amount to \u201ca crime against humanity.\u201d HRW suggests President Abdel Fattah El Sisi should \u201cdirect the Justice Ministry to create an independent special prosecutor empowered to inspect detention sites, investigate and prosecute abuse by the security services, and publish a record of action taken.\u201d<\/p>\n

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid responded<\/strong><\/a> to the report<\/strong> by saying HRW has always been a biased organization due to its sources of funding and have shown an inability to comprehend the situation on the ground in Egypt.
