LAST WEEK IN 3 MINS-<\/p>\n

ECONOMY-<\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- The delayed fourth IMF loan review is still right around the corner:<\/strong> The International Monetary Fund is set to conduct the fourth review of our USD 8 bn loan program by the end of September or in October at the latest, two government sources told Enterprise<\/a>. The review, which was pushed back from its initial date in September, is set to unlock a USD 1.3 bn tranche.<\/p>\n

The IMF also released its latest country report on Egypt<\/strong>, in which it said that the country\u2019s performance for the third review was \u201csatisfactory.\u201d All in all, Egypt met half of the structural benchmarks laid out by the IMF. <\/p>\n

#2- CBE turns the page on a seven-year chapter of losses:<\/strong> The Central Bank of Egypt reported a net income<\/a> of EGP 22.8 bn in fiscal year 2023-2024, compared to losses of EGP 86.3 bn in the previous fiscal year. This marks the first time that the bank has turned a profit since FY 2016-2017.<\/p>\n

EDUCATION-<\/strong><\/p>\n

Gov\u2019t rolls over caps on tuition fee hikes into a second year: <\/strong>The limits up to which private and international schools were permitted to raise their tuition fees last year will remain in effect<\/a> in the 2024-2025 academic year.<\/p>\n

INVESTMENT- <\/strong><\/p>\n

#1- A mega phosphoric acid plant in the works set to give the local fertilizer industry a <\/strong>boost:<\/strong> A local consortium led by Abu Tartour For Phosphoric Acid will set up a USD 1.2 bn phosphoric acid production plant<\/a>. The project will be carried out over a 36-month period and aims to produce 900k tons of phosphoric acid a year.<\/p>\n

#2- A USD 60 mn carbon black factory in the making?<\/strong> One of India\u2019s largest black carbon producers is interested in setting up a USD 60 mn plant in Egypt<\/a>. A delegation from the company will be visiting Egypt to conduct field visits to potential locations that could house the factory. <\/p>\n

WHAT\u2019S HAPPENING NEXT WEEK-<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

#1- Could we finally see non-oil private sector back in growth territory?<\/strong> S&P Global will publish Egypt\u2019s PMI figures for August on Tuesday, 3 September measuring the country\u2019s non-oil private sector activity. Last month saw business activity hit its second highest level<\/a> since August 2021.<\/p>\n

#2- It\u2019s interest rate week: <\/strong>The Central Bank of Egypt\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee is meeting next Thursday to review rates. The bank left interest rates unchanged during its last meeting<\/a> in July citing its commitment to sustaining the current trajectory of inflation moderation. <\/p>\n

Remember:<\/strong> The committee delivered a jumbo 600 bps rate hike<\/a> following a surprise monetary policy meeting in March, which coincided with the float of the EGP and the securing of an expanded package from the IMF. The CBE has left interest rates unchanged<\/a> since. <\/p>\n

#3- The US-Egypt Joint Economic Committee will be convening on 4-5 September<\/strong> in Washington to talk all things partnership between the two countries\u2019 private sectors, boosting trade, bilateral investment, and following up on the outcomes of the first meeting of the committee.<\/p>\n

#4- Explore the future of digital commerce next month at <\/strong>Seamless North Africa<\/a><\/strong>.<\/strong> The two-day event will be held at the Egypt International Exhibition Center from 2-3 September under the theme The Future of Digital Commerce Across North Africa. The event brings together mechants, enterprises, and SMEs in the e-commerce space as well as players in the fintech, banking, and retail sectors \u201cto drive forward the future of digital commerce.\u201d Take a look at the schedule here<\/a> and register to attend here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

AROUND THE WORLD IN SEVEN DAYS- <\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

#1- The \u201ctime has come\u201d for rate cuts in the US:<\/strong> Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell indicated<\/a> his readiness to start cutting interest rates in September. Powell emphasized that \u201cthe time has come for policy to adjust,\u201d citing cooling inflation and slowing job growth.<\/p>\n

The odds:<\/strong> Markets now see a 35% chance of a larger-than-usual 50 bps cut in September, up from 28% before Powell\u2019s remarks,<\/p>\n

#2- Trump gets indicted, again:<\/strong> Former President and current presidential nominee Donald Trump was hit with a fresh indictment<\/a> in the 2020 election case, as special counsel Jack Smith submitted a revised indictment accusing Trump of election subversion.<\/p>\n

#3- Israel and Hezbollah <\/strong>exchanged attacks on Sunday<\/a><\/strong>, with Israel launching \u201caround 100\u201d warplanes into Lebanon in what it said was a preemptive move against an attack from Hezbollah. The group later fired hundreds of rockets into Israel, hitting military targets and killing one Israeli soldier. Hezbollah\u2019s attack was in retaliation for the killing of Fuad Shukr, one of its senior members, in Beirut last month. Although the exchange of fire has raised concerns of regional escalation, both Hezbollah and Israel are \u201cemploying the language of containment.\u201d<\/p>\n
