Topping coverage of Egypt in the foreign press this morning were the UNESCO <\/strong>leadership elections. <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s candidate for the job, Moushira Khattab, is within the top three, just under the French and Qatari candidates, who were head-to-head after yesterday\u2019s ballot.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all have the right to vie in election as long as we fit the conditions,\u201d<\/strong> potential presidential candidate Mohamed Anwar Sadat told Turkey\u2019s Anadolu Agency<\/a>. Sadat was kicked out of parliament after being accused of leaking the draft NGO law to foreign embassies, a charge he denies. \u201cThe atmosphere of this competition will make us decide whether to run or not,\u201d Sadat says.<\/p>\n

The arrest of members of the LGBTQ community in Egypt is \u201cnot necessarily any <\/strong>broader <\/strong>effort at diversion<\/strong> \u2026 This is the way that the government responds. It\u2019s much more elemental than that,\u201d Century Foundation senior Fellow Michael Hanna tells ABC News<\/a>. He says it was unclear if the arrests were pre-planned to \u201cdraw attention away from Egypt\u2019s weak economy or unrelated political developments,\u201d but they \u201cdo follow a clear pattern.\u201d<\/p>\n
