Continuing to lower debt costs, extend debt maturities, and diversify the investor base, currencies, and markets should help address the debt burden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember: <\/strong>Debt service costs \u2014 as outlined in this fiscal year\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/3fd60d61-8953-483c-a09b-8bce0f612e9e\/egypt%25e2%2580%2599s-fy-24-25-draft-budget-delivered-to-the-house\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">budget<\/a> \u2014 are set to reach EGP 1.8 tn, taking up around 46% of state expenditures, by our calculations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Debt as a proportion of GDP to fall:<\/strong> The Finance Ministry expects the country\u2019s debt-to-GDP ratio falling to below 85% by the end of FY 2025-26, he said, adding that the government wants to maintain an annual primary surplus to achieve this goal. The country\u2019s debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to fall to 88.2% in the current fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>External debt fell some 4% y-o-y by the end of the last fiscal year<\/strong>, falling USD 3.5 bn, Kouchouk said, without disclosing the final figure. Our external debt registered <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/bd62e06e-66fe-4707-8f94-6c6f8ab1fe41\/our%253cmark%253e-external-debt%253c%2Fmark%253e-fell-8%2525-between-december-and-may\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">record decline<\/a> in May, dropping 8.4% from December 2023 to USD 153.9 bn. The average length of our foreign debt is 12.7 years, he added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Moving forward: <\/strong>The state plans to turn to the local debt market over the coming period, Kouchouk said, adding that the ministry will be looking to expand its debt instruments like treasury bonds, green bonds, and sukuk. He also mentioned taking out soft loans from our multilateral partners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">BOOSTING REVENUES THROUGH HIGHER TAX COLLECTION-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>No new<\/strong><strong> taxes: <\/strong>The government has no plans to introduce new taxes, Deputy Finance Minister for Taxes Sherif Al Kilani said, calling the idea \u201cunrealistic\u201d in light of the current inflationary pressures. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>In order to boost tax revenues<\/strong>, the government wants to integrate the informal economy, he added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Tax revenues on the rise: <\/strong>Tax revenues grew by 30% y-o-y in fiscal year 2023-24 to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/992751036228650?ref=embed_post\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">record<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/992751036228650?ref=embed_post\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EGP 1.49 tn<\/a>, which helped push revenues up 60%, outpacing spending growth. The move is still being studied, he added.
