ON THIS DAY-<\/strong> On this day in 2005, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf<\/a> was elected president of Liberia, becoming the first woman to lead an African country. Lyndon Johnson took over as US President in 1963<\/a>, a day after the assassination of John F Kennedy. In 2011, Yemen's President Ali Abdullah Saleh agreed to step down amid a fierce uprising to oust him. The Ley Ju\u00e1rez was passed on this day in 1855 in Mexico, abolishing special courts for the clergy and military in an attempt by justice minister Benito Ju\u00e1rez<\/a> to eliminate the remnants of colonialism in Mexico and promote equality. The first issue of Life magazine was issued on this day in 1936<\/a>. The magazine later became a pioneer in photojournalism and one of the major forces in that field's development.
