The government is aware that relying exclusively on the Nile \u2014 with or without the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam \u2014 is not a sustainable plan, which is why it is taking measures to diversify its sources, by commissioning more desalination and water treatment plants. But it needs the combination of both to cover its needs, especially in the long-run, and since water is already fast becoming a scarce resource due to booming population growth levels.
