Britain\u2019s Foreign and Commonwealth Office \u201cwill continue to provide assistance to Laura and her family \u2026 and our embassy is in regular contact with the Egyptian authorities,\u201d a spokesman said. The British citizen apparently \u201cmisunderstood questions and admitted importing the drugs\u201d <\/strong>when questioned by the judge, Plummer\u2019s lawyer tells The Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Plummer and her defense team maintain that she was unaware the meds are illegal in Egypt,<\/strong> explaining she had been bringing them in for her Egyptian husband\u2019s chronic back pain. Plummer\u2019s family claim \u201cshe\u2019s already having a nervous breakdown and is being kicked and punched in the holding prison,\u201d according to Daily Mail<\/a>. British tabloid newspaper The Sun<\/a> also has a series of photographs showing the \u201csqualid\u201d conditions of Plummer\u2019s detention at the Qena prison where she will be held. The story is getting widespread coverage, with pickups in the Associated Press<\/a>, BBC<\/a>, The Guardian<\/a>, Newsweek<\/a>, Xinhua<\/a>, The Independent<\/a>, and BuzzFeed<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Coming in at a very close second is the hanging of 15 men convicted of a 2013 attack on a military checkpoint in Sinai<\/strong>, in what appears to be the biggest number of executions carried out under President Abdel Fattah El Sisi\u2019s rule. Their charges include \u201cjoining militant groups and taking part in carrying out, planning and assisting in killing a number of army and police personnel in Sinai,\u201d Reuters reports<\/a>, citing security sources. The executions were carried out at the Borg El Arab and Wadi El Natroun prisons, an unnamed security source tells Anadolu Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe executions of so many on a single day appears to be a reflection of the government\u2019s recently declared resolve to crush the [militant] insurgency\u201d <\/strong>following the Rawda mosque attack last month, the Associated Press says<\/a>. Some, including rights activists and Islamists, believe the executions could \u201cdrive more young Egyptians into the arms of [Daesh],\u201d according to The New York Times\u2019 Nour Youssef<\/a>.
