Plenty of election drama took place during the three-day break, with <strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi officially filing paperwork to get his name on the ballot <\/strong>and lawyer <strong>Khaled Ali withdrawing<\/strong>. Election drama in the news reached a fever pitch with an alleged attack on former Central Auditing Organization head <strong>Hisham Genena<\/strong>. All of that and more in the Speed Round.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> Reports on the economy, on the other hand, continue to be positive, <strong>with Moody\u2019s praising the proposed Bankruptcy Act on Thursday.<\/strong> The ratings agency said \u201cthe law was credit positive for Egypt\u2019s banks, as it will provide more options to [handle] viable, but troubled, companies and make loan workouts faster and more flexible,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/commoditiesNews\/idAFFWN1PK1EG\">Reuters reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This comes as the House of Representatives is expected to hold its final plenary debate on the act today<\/strong> ahead of its vote on the law, <a href=\"http:\/\/gate.ahram.org.eg\/News\/1807364.aspx\">Ahram Gate reports<\/a>. The bill, a key element of the Sisi administration\u2019s economic reform program, would effectively decriminalize bankruptcy and allow companies more time and options for restructuring by introducing mechanisms to help settle commercial disputes outside the courtroom and simplify bankruptcy proceedings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also today in the House:<\/strong> The Economics Committee plans to hold what Consumer Protection Authority head Atef Yacoub hopes will be its final discussion of the new <strong>Consumer Protection Act<\/strong>. The law would, among other things, <strong>force retailers to print prices on products<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/362445\/14\/%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%AA%D8%B5%D8%A7%D8%AF%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D8%AA%D9%86%D8%A7%D9%82%D8%B4-%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%AD%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%AA%D9%87%D9%84%D9%83-%D8%BA%D8%AF%D9%8B%D8%A7\">Yacoub tells Al Mal<\/a>. The Federation of Egyptian Industries plans to hold a meeting today on the law and will send its recommendations to the House, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/362454\/14\/%D8%A7%D8%AA%D8%AD%D8%A7%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B5%D9%86%D8%A7%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D9%8A%D9%8F%D8%B9%D8%AF-%D8%AA%D9%88%D8%B5%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AA%D9%87-%D8%AD%D9%88%D9%84-%D9%82%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%88%D9%86-%D8%AD%D9%85%D8%A7%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%AA%D9%87\">according to the newspaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi arrived in Addis Ababa yesterday to attend the 30th African Union Summit<\/strong>, which wraps up tomorrow, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/photos\/a.153526355166753.1073741828.153405978512124\/330791774106876\/?type=3\">Ittihadiya said in a statement<\/a>. The president is expected to participate in a closed session with the union\u2019s heads of state to discuss institutional reforms and efforts to establish an African freetrade zone. El Sisi also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Egy.Pres.Spokesman\/photos\/a.153526355166753.1073741828.153405978512124\/331505387368848\/?type=3\">chaired yesterday a session<\/a> on terrorism at the Peace and Security Council, of which Egypt is the president of throughout January. <strong>Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn had reportedly suggested holding a tripartite meeting with Egypt and Sudan on the sidelines<\/strong> of the summit to resolve the gridlock over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/01\/21\/el-sisi-expresses-extreme-concern-to-desalegn\/\">as we noted last week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deregulating the skies over Africa: <\/strong>The AU Commission <a href=\"https:\/\/au.int\/en\/pressreleases\/20180122\/african-union-commission-gears-launch-highly-anticipated-single-african-sky\">is set to launch<\/a> its Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) at the summit today. The project provides for full liberalization of market access between African states, free exercise of traffic rights, elimination of restrictions on ownership and full liberalization of frequencies, fares and capacities. Egypt is on board with SAATM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is shaping up to be a busy week both regionally and globally<\/strong>, too, with no sign the business and econ news agenda will slow after Davos:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is the \u201canti-corruption\u201d drive in KSA coming to an end?<\/strong> After an unusual interview with Reuters to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-saudi-arrests-alwaleed-exclusive\/exclusive-detained-saudi-billionaire-alwaleed-confident-his-troubles-will-end-soon-idUSKBN1FG010\">prove he hadn\u2019t been jailed or tortured<\/a>, celebrity investor Alwaleed bin Talal has been set free, sparking speculation about what assets, if any, he transferred to the state to secure his release. Alwaleed has returned home and will \u201cremain at the helm of his company,\u201d according to multiple reports quoting unnamed Saudi government officials. The news is front page this morning in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/billionaire-saudi-prince-al-waleed-is-released-from-detention-1517056497\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ee4f6844-033c-11e8-9650-9c0ad2d7c5b5\">Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who took agreements?<\/strong> The latest are Waleed Al-Ibrahim, co-founder of MBC with Saleh Kamel, and retail giant Fawaz Al Hokair, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-01-27\/saudi-billionaire-media-tycoon-freed-as-ritz-empties\">Bloomberg<\/a>. There\u2019s widespread speculation that Al-Ibrahim may have handed control of MBC to the state; prior to the corruption crackdown, he had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/26\/world\/middleeast\/saudi-mbc-corruption-crackdown.html\">in sale talks<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a50075d2-0069-11e8-9650-9c0ad2d7c5b5\">representatives of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HSBC has turned down a leading role in Doha\u2019s new USD bond issuance <\/strong>as it navigates how to do business in the GCC without angering the Arab quartet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-gulf-qatar-hsbc-exclusive\/exclusive-hsbc-side-steps-high-profile-qatar-deals-in-gulf-gauntlet-idUSKBN1FF1XM\">Reuters claims<\/a>, citing four sources with knowledge of the development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The World Bank\u2019s chief economist is leaving \u201ceffective immediately\u201d<\/strong> a little more than a year after taking the job, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/be72f8e2-0144-11e8-9650-9c0ad2d7c5b5\">the Financial Times<\/a> reports. Paul Romer, the noted US economist, was said to be feuding with staff over everything from \u201cdiktats on grammar and brevity in reports to serious questions about methodology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global investors have given emerging markets plenty of love over the last couple of weeks<\/strong>, with inflows to EM equity and bond funds at their highest levels in about 18 months, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/cac11928-011f-11e8-9650-9c0ad2d7c5b5\">Financial Times report<\/a> citing industry data. EM equities are up 8.7% so far this year in USD terms, EM sovereign bonds are flat, and EM local currency bonds are up 4.4% in USD terms. EM currencies, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/57bc0ec8-0279-11e8-9650-9c0ad2d7c5b5\">continue to do well against the USD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This comes as pundits are trying to make sense of what\u2019s happening globally: Growth is reasonably synchronized across major economies<\/strong>, but there are worrying signs that economic growth in low-income frontier countries is no longer expected to outstrip that of middle-income EM. Hit up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/27\/business\/its-not-a-roar-but-the-global-economy-is-finally-making-noise.html\">the New York Times<\/a> for the first point, where Peter S. Goodman writes that \u201cevery major economy on earth is expanding at once, a synchronous wave of growth that is creating jobs, lifting fortunes and tempering fears of popular discontent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The counterpoint:<\/strong> The idea that low-income frontier countries may not catch up to their middle-income peers \u201c<strong>calls into question the logic of foreign investment in poorer countries<\/strong>, if their typically higher volatility and poorer liquidity are not balanced by faster growth,\u201d Steve Johnson writes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/91c4bae0-011e-11e8-9650-9c0ad2d7c5b5\">the Financial Times<\/a>. The story tiers Egypt along with Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya and Ethiopia as \u201clower-income\u201d countries, while the middle-income group includes Brazil, Russia, India, South Africa, Mexico and Turkey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Donald made (relatively subdued) mumblings about playing nice with others<\/strong>, telling Davos that \u201cAmerica First\u201d doesn\u2019t mean \u201cAmerica alone.\u201d That will last until the next late-night \/ early-morning twitter binge, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/01\/26\/trump-to-tell-davos-when-the-united-states-grows-so-does-the-world.html\">CNBC<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2018\/01\/26\/politics\/trump-davos-speech-globalization\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> have coverage if you like.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump is sending Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to visit \u201cshithole countries\u201d <\/strong>better known as \u2018our continent,\u2019 telling African leaders in a note that Tillerson will be visiting unspecified counties in March, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/trump-tells-african-leaders-tillerson-will-visit-in-march-1517078024\">the WSJ notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finally: Flu season is ravaging the United States this year<\/strong>, \u201cdriving influenza infections to levels not seen since the swine flu pandemic of 2009,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-01-26\/flu-season-from-hell-keeps-getting-worse\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>, saying that by the time this flu season is over, \u201cmore than 50k Americans will be dead.\u201d Allow us, friends, to remind you that flu doesn\u2019t know nationalities: If it\u2019s in the US, it\u2019s on its way here (if hasn\u2019t arrived already).
