Is the English language taking over the world? <\/strong>Private English-language school students in Egypt that \u201cnow struggle to speak Arabic\u201d are part of a \u201cglobal generation in which tens of mns of people from outside the English-speaking world speak perfect English,\u201d the Financial Times\u2019 Simon Kuper says<\/a>. The number of English language students around the world is c. 10x higher than the collective number of people learning other languages, German linguist Ulrich Ammon estimates. \u201cAnd the more people who speak English, the more useful English becomes.\u201d That not only means that the US and UK will eventually \u201close their dominance of media\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s bad news for non-English languages and literatures,\u201d Kuper argues. \u201cThe next global ruling class will perceive the world chiefly in English.
