<\/a> At least 11 people were killed when a gunmen attacked the Coptic Orthodox Mar Mina church and a shop in Helwan before being shot on Friday.<\/strong> \u201cThe gunman killed at least nine people, including a policeman, at the church,\u201d Reuters reports<\/a>. \u201cThe Coptic Church said the gunman first shot at a Christian-owned shop 4 km away, killing two people<\/a>.\u201d Five others were wounded, \u201cincluding two women who [the Health Ministry] said were in a serious condition.\u201d Witnesses from the scene told The Associated Press<\/a> that it was bystanders who helped contain the situation. \u201cOne man in particular \u2014 a 53-year-old resident who pounced on the gunman as he was reloading his automatic rifle \u2014 likely saved dozens of lives.\u201d (Tap here<\/a> for more survivor accounts from The AP and here for videos<\/a> of the attack)<\/p>\n

As Daesh claimed the attack, authorities were able to identify the gunman,<\/strong> whom investigators said was linked to several terrorist attacks since last year. Friday\u2019s attack came a day after<\/a> a roadside bomb killed six people in Sinai, including a senior military officer. Additional security forces have reportedly been deployed to guard churches around the country ahead of 7 January\u2019s Coptic Christmas celebrations. The Interior Ministry said it has already managed<\/a> to dismantle a terrorist cell that had attacks planned for New Year\u2019s eve, killing three suspected terrorists in the process.<\/p>\n

US President Donald Trump spoke with President Abdel Fattah El Sisi <\/strong>\u201cto offer condolences to the people of Egypt\u201d and \u201ccondemned the attack and reiterated that the United States will continue to stand with Egypt in the face of terrorism,\u201d according to a White House statement<\/a>. The Vatican\u2019s Pope Francis has also expressed<\/a> his support and condolences.<\/p>\n

The attack requires a broad response from \u201can empowered civil society,\u201d <\/strong>Ha Hellyer says in a piece for The National<\/a>. \u201cAfter attacks such as these, the instinct is to focus solely on security solutions. Security solutions are, of course, important \u2013 the attackers are violent extremists \u2013 but there are wider issues that ought to be addressed.<\/p>\n
