Egypt\u2019s external debt registers record decline in May:<\/strong> External debt dropped to USD 153.9 bn at the end of May, down by USD 14.2 bn \u2014 or 8.43% \u2014 from its level at the end of December 2023, according to a high-level source at the central bank. <\/p>\n

We\u2019ve got our imports covered for eight months: <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s foreign reserves can now cover around 7.9 months of merchandise imports, \u201cgreatly exceeding internationally recognized safe levels,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

Lower yields on USD-denominated bonds and falling credit risk <\/strong>augur well for Egypt\u2019s credit rating outlook and cost of borrowing in international markets, the source added, pointing to the decline in the risk accorded Egypt\u2019s debt instruments as a sign of international markets\u2019 confidence in the ability of the country to meet its obligations.<\/p>\n

Also helping: <\/strong>There was \u201ctremendous growth\u201d in FX inflows, which rose 200% \u2014 remittances from Egyptians abroad more than doubled \u2014 between early March and now. <\/p>\n
