In its first policy meeting under new chief Jerome Powell, the Fed indicated that inflation should finally move higher after years below its 2% target and that the economy had recently gained momentum. It also raised the estimated longer-term \u201cneutral\u201d rate,<strong> a sign the current gradual rate hike cycle could go on longer than previously thought<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed\/fed-lifts-rates-signals-tougher-stance-as-economy-strengthens-idUSKBN1GX0DK\">according to Reuters<\/a>. The Fed projected US economic growth of 2.7% in 2018, up from the 2.5% forecast in December. Its preferred measure of inflation was expected to end 2018 at 1.9%, unchanged from the previous forecast, but it is seen rising a bit above the target next year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our own central bank\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee is set to <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/en\/MonetaryPolicy\/Pages\/MPCMeetingSchedule.aspx\"><strong>meet next Thursday<\/strong><\/a><strong> to decide on interest rates.<\/strong> With annual urban inflation dropping to 14.4% \u2014 the lowest rate since October 2016 \u2014 the CBE <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/03\/18\/what-were-tracking-on-18-march-2018\/\">hinted earlier this week<\/a> at a possible rate cut by saying that inflation appears under control in the medium-term. Research houses <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/03\/15\/what-were-tracking-on-15-march-2018\/\">have been unanimous<\/a> in saying that the CBE might cut interest rates again this month, with differences on the magnitude of the cut ranging from 50-200 bps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s the last weekend of campaigning in the presidential election<\/strong>, with voters due to go to the polls starting on Monday, 26 March. Balloting ends on Wednesday, 28 March, and companies are being asked to give staff sufficient time during the workday to make it to and from their polling station. Results are due to be announced on Monday, 2 April. Look for the poll to continue dominating coverage of Egypt in the international press in the meantime. The two campaigns <a href=\"http:\/\/english.ahram.org.eg\/NewsContent\/1\/1187\/293211\/Egypt\/-Presidential-Elections--\/Egyptian-presidential-candidates-deliver-final-mes.aspx\">go into a \u2018quiet period\u2019 on Saturday<\/a> ahead of the start of voting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No Egyptian universities made the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/student\/best-universities\/best-universities-arab-world#survey-answer\"><strong>Times Higher Education\u2019s ranking<\/strong><\/a><strong> of the top five universities in the Arab world.<\/strong> Egyptian universities took nine of the 32 slots in the ranking, with Beni Suef University topping them in tenth place, followed by AUC. The top five were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>King Abdulaziz University (KSA)<\/li>\n<li>Khalifa University (UAE)<\/li>\n<li>Qatar University<\/li>\n<li>Jordan University of Science and Technology<\/li>\n<li>United Arab Emirates University<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Global M&A this year crossed the USD 1 tn mark on Tuesday, the fastest it has ever reached that level<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/6d2d516e-2cb7-11e8-9b4b-bc4b9f08f381\">according to the Financial Times<\/a>. Announced transactions totalled USD 4.6 tn this year, up 50% y-o-y and 12% higher than 2007, according to data from Dealogic. Investment bankers have have cut a string of USD 10 bn-plus M&As in 2018. Activity in Japan and the UK has more than doubled from a year ago while German M&A volumes are up fourfold. The rise was buoyed by quickening economic growth and strong business confidence, particularly following the tax cuts passed in Washington last year. Notable transactions this year include: US health insurer Cigna\u2019s USD 67 bn takeover of Express Scripts, German utility Eon\u2019s acquisition of renewable energy group Innogy for EUR 43 bn, and Comcast\u2019s GBP 22.1 bn bid for Sky.<\/p>\n<p>Also in the headlines this morning:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook engineers finished reprogramming the artificial remorse module for Mark Zuckerberg<\/strong> in time for him to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-facebook-cambridge-analytica\/zuckerberg-says-facebook-made-mistakes-on-user-data-vows-curbs-idUSKBN1GX0OG\">say yesterday<\/a> that \u201cthis was a major breach of trust. I\u2019m really sorry this happened.
