The case was filed by 42 taxi drivers seeking to shut down the operations of both platforms, claiming the ride-hailing services were illegally using private cars as taxis. Lawyer Khaled al-Gammal, who represents the plaintiffs, \u201csaid <strong>the court suspended the two companies\u2019 licenses, banned their apps and suspended the use of private cars<\/strong> by the two ride-hailing services.\u201d A spokesperson for the taxi drivers is claiming that the order goes into immediate effect, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/369704\/17\/%D8%AC%D9%85%D8%B9%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%A7%D9%83%D8%B3%D9%89-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%B6-%D8%AD%D9%83%D9%85-%D9%88%D9%82%D9%81-%D8%A3%D9%88%D8%A8%D8%B1-%D9%88%D9%83%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%85-%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%AC%D8%A8-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%81%D8%A7%D8%B0%E2%80%8E\">Al Mal reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both companies say they will continue operating; Uber plans appeal:<\/strong> Uber plans to appeal the decision within the permitted 60-day window and \u201cremain available in Egypt in the meantime,\u201d as the company is \u201cfully committed to working with the entire sector \u2013 including taxis \u2013 to improve mobility in Egypt together,\u201d a spokesperson told the newswire. It also appears to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CareemEG\/photos\/a.1712800605615052.1073741828.1709414765953636\/2098253520403090\/?type=3&theater\">business as usual for Careem<\/a>, which is also widely expected to appeal, but has said it had not received any official notice to cease its Egypt operations. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/369705\/17\/%D8%A3%D9%88%D9%84-%D8%AA%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%8A%D9%82-%D9%85%D9%86-%D9%83%D8%B1%D9%8A%D9%85-%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%89-%D8%AF%D8%B9%D9%88%D9%89-%D9%88%D9%82%D9%81-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AE%D9%8A%D8%B5\">Al Mal claims<\/a> to have obtained a message the company sent its drivers stating unless it receives an official cease and desist, the company will continue operations.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just like with <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/11\/21\/government-lodges-appeal-of-administrative-court-ruling-banning-ergot-in-wheat-imports\/\"><strong>the ergot ruling<\/strong><\/a><strong> and Tiran and Sanafir, the Administrative Court appears to have gotten ahead of itself.<\/strong> New <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/01\/09\/house-agenda-includes-legislation-on-new-pharma-regulator-ride-hailing-apps-cybercrimes-victims-of-terrorism-quota-for-women-in-the-judiciary-among-others\/\">legislation to govern the activities of ride-hailing apps<\/a> such as Uber and Careem is in the works. Last we heard, the law had been pending sign-off from the Ismail Cabinet before it goes to the House of Representatives; the Council of State concluded its review of the bill in January. With political support in both the government and parliament for the sector, look for reasonable odds of the verdict being overturned on appeal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The story is dominating international coverage of Egypt this morning<\/strong>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/aponline\/2018\/03\/20\/world\/middleeast\/ap-ml-egypt-ride-hailing-apps.html?mtrref=www.nytimes.com&gwh=F41D83449BE65C81EB3B8B94135A0D9B&gwt=pay\">The Associated Press<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2018-03\/20\/c_137053253.htm\">Xinhua<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/en\/business\/aviation-and-transport\/2018\/03\/20\/Following-complaints-Uber-and-Careem-asked-to-cease-operations-in-Egypt.html\">Al Arabiya<\/a> all picking up the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The silver lining: It\u2019s being portrayed as part of a global \u201cUber vs. Taxi drivers\u201d and not \u201cEgypt vs. Business\u201d story.<\/strong> \u201cThe case builds on a long-festering dispute between taxi drivers and their ride-sharing counterparts. The taxi drivers have repeatedly complained that they are forced to shoulder licensing costs not borne by Uber and Careem,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-03-20\/uber-careem-hit-stoplight-as-egypt-court-orders-halt-in-service\">writes Tarek El Tablawy for Bloomberg<\/a>, which is the general consensus of the coverage.
