It\u2019s another morning of slim pickings for Egypt in the foreign press, <\/strong>with politics and the elections being the only common thread we\u2019re spotting.<\/p>\n

Election boycotts do not always work<\/strong>, Gail Buttorff write for the Washington Post<\/a> in context of the opposition calls for voters to say away from the upcoming presidential election. \u201cSome boycotts achieve reforms, some are ignored, and some inspire post-election protests that may or may not leave the existing regime in place,\u201d Buttroff writes. She says \u201cthe potential effect of a boycott in Egypt is yet to be determined,\u201d but that the \u201creal test\u201d for the opposition \u201cwill begin the day after the election.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although the boycott\u2019s effect may very well be limited, the state is working to silence critical voices ahead of the election<\/strong>, the Committee to Protect Journalists<\/a>\u2019 Sherif Mansour says. Mansour takes note of the arrest of several journalists for interviewing opposition candidates and the clampdown on \u201cfake news\u201d reports.
