{"id":630976,"date":"2018-03-06T04:15:21","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T04:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2018\/03\/06\/frontier-disruption\/"},"modified":"2018-03-06T04:15:21","modified_gmt":"2018-03-06T04:15:21","slug":"frontier-disruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2018\/03\/06\/frontier-disruption\/","title":{"rendered":"Frontier disruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The final session yesterday morning was headlined <strong>Entrepreneurial disruption across frontier and emerging markets <\/strong>and featured a panel discussion between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ankur Shah, chief finance and development officer, <strong>Careem<\/strong> (the widely known ridesharing app)<\/li>\n<li>Faraz Khalid, chief executive officer, <strong>Noon<\/strong> (the e-commerce platform in which Emaar\u2019s Mohamed Alabbar invested alongside Saudi\u2019s Public Investment Fund)<\/li>\n<li>Mohamed El Kalla, founder and CEO, <strong>CIRA <\/strong>(Egypt\u2019s largest investor in private education)<\/li>\n<li>Robert Willett, non_executive director, Mobile World Group (Vietnamese investor in everything from e-commerce to groceries and pharmacies)<\/li>\n<li>Moderator: Heather Henyon, founder, <strong>Women\u2019s Angel Investor Network<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The panel was heavy on Silicon Valley rhetoric transplanted to emerging markets, but featured a handful of ridiculously interesting facts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key takeaways: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The regional opportunity is staggering, even if it is fragmented. <\/strong>Consider that together, MENA, Iran, Turkey and Pakistan have:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More than 650 mn people<\/li>\n<li>1.5x the GDP of India<\/li>\n<li>Higher smartphone penetration than China<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And yet only 2% of total consumer spending in this region via e-commerce<\/strong>, although 8.5% of the population has a credit card. That 2% figure? It\u2019s better than Vietnam, where Willett says the comparable number is closer to 1%. In developed markets? Look for figures closer to 25-30% on the high end of the scale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As that 2% moves closer to the 15% average in other markets, we\u2019re looking at USD 400-500 bn annual sales opportunity <\/strong>in e-commerce and consumer internet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building an e-commerce platform will be expensive<\/strong>, with costs running as high as USD 60-70 to acquire a customer in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. \u201cYou need a 10-year horizon,\u201d says Khalid.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E-commerce in MENA is less about convenience, but about access<\/strong>, says Khalid. It\u2019s about connecting rural Saudi cities, for example, to global brands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cash-on-delivery is king in MENA. <\/strong>Consumers have moved from buying on desktops \/ laptops to mobile websites to via apps, but they still prefer to pay in cash rather than use their credit cards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The standout performer of the panel was Egypt\u2019s El Kalla<\/strong>, who proved himself articulate, engaging and passionate about his business, the largest private-sector investor in the nation\u2019s education sector. (Yes, we\u2019re Egyptian nationalists for saying this. But he was. Ask the Emirati guys sitting with us, who were captivated by his remarks.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Careem is processing 1 mn transactions a day<\/strong> across 100 cities in 16 countries spanning from Morocco to Pakistan. Most of its (not)employees are \u2018captains\u2019 driving their own personal vehicles, though in some \u201cmore highly regulated countries, we worked with licensed [taxi] drivers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobile World now has more than 1,000 outlets<\/strong>, including 900 big box stores and some 300 stories selling fresh food. It\u2019s now expanding into pharmacies. It has a 40% share of Vietnam\u2019s phone market, 20% of its white goods market and its new food line already has a 5% market share.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Staff come for the mission, the challenge and the work environment \u2014 but they stay for the employee stock ownership program. <\/strong>Just about everyone on stage tipped their hat to the importance of ESOPs to keeping talented staff.
