The new tariff structure went into effect on Friday. \u201cCommuters will be charged a base fare of EGP 3 (USD 0.17) for the first nine stops, EGP 5 for up to 16 stops, and a maximum of EGP 7 for anything more than 16,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/egypt-economy-metro\/egypt-hikes-cairo-metro-fare-in-latest-austerity-measure-idUSL8N1SH83L\">Reuters says<\/a>. The old system saw a standard EGP 2 ticket good for an unlimited number of stops. To mitigate the impact of the hike on metro regulars, \u201cdiscounted rates will be maintained under the new system for students, the elderly, and those with special needs,\u201d the newswire notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background: <\/strong>Chatter about the new system had been in the works for the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/05\/08\/what-were-tracking-on-08-may-2018\/\">last several months<\/a>. Transport Minister Hisham Arafat had <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/07\/11\/metro-ticket-prices-will-not-rise-until-metro-line-3-is-operational-in-2020-transport-minister\/\">given conflicting signals<\/a> on when the hike would take place, at various times pointing to 4Q2018 and 2020. Ticket prices doubled under similar circumstances in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2017\/03\/26\/metro-ticket-fares-hiked-by-100-to-egp-2-effective-friday\/\">March last year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The hike is meant to make the Cairo Metro system sustainable<\/strong>, Assistant Transport Minister Amr Shaat <a href=\"http:\/\/almalnews.com\/Story\/375601\/58\/%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%A4%D9%88%D9%84-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%83%D9%84%D9%81%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AD%D9%82%D9%8A%D9%82%D8%A9-%D9%84%D8%AA%D8%B0%D9%83%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%88-16-5-%D8%AC%D9%86%D9%8A%D9%87-%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B2%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AF%D8%A9-%D9%84%D8%B4%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D9%82%D8%B7%D8%B9-%D8%BA%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%B1\">tells Al Mal<\/a>, explaining that ticket prices are still subsidized: The real price per ride, he said, is something near EGP 16.50. The company makes around EGP 1.2 bn a year and spends an average EGP 5.6 bn, according to Managing Director Khaled Sabra. Cairo Metro chief Ali Fadaly nodded along in agreement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alborsanews.com\/2018\/05\/11\/1104315\">telling the state news agency<\/a> that the move \u2014 which Transport Minister Hisham Arafat said was <a href=\"http:\/\/almalnews.com\/Story\/375603\/58\/%D8%A8%D8%B9%D8%AF-%D8%B1%D9%81%D8%B9-%D8%A3%D8%B3%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D8%B0%D8%A7%D9%83%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%88--%D9%88%D8%B2%D9%8A%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%82%D9%84-%D8%B6%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%B1%D9%89-%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%8A%D8%AD-(%D9%81%D9%8A%D8%AF%D9%8A%D9%88)\">\u201clong overdue\u201d<\/a> \u2014 is necessary to help the company cope with its rising operational costs and continue working on upgrading and expanding the lines and network at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>This comes as the Planning Ministry says that as much as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mpmaregypt\/?ref=br_rs\"><strong>EGP 6 bn will be invested in metro upgrades<\/strong><\/a><strong> this year<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/04\/18\/nat-frances-ratp-plan-to-set-up-a-jv-to-operate-maintain-cairo-metro-line-3\/\">including work on Lines 3 and 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MPs perform for the cameras: <\/strong>Angry MPs submitted urgent notes to House of Representatives speaker Ali Abdel Aal, asking him to summon Arafat to discuss the fare hike, which they said was too steep, <a href=\"http:\/\/almalnews.com\/Story\/375614\/58\/%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%88%D8%A7%D8%A8-%D9%8A%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%AF%D8%B9%D9%89-%D9%88%D8%B2%D9%8A%D8%B1-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%86%D9%82%D9%84-%D8%A8%D8%B3%D8%A8%D8%A8-%D8%AA%D8%B0%D9%83%D8%B1%D8%A9-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%88\">according to Al Mal<\/a>. <strong>Lawyers have also filed lawsuits to reverse the decision<\/strong>, according to Al Mal.
