The first sketch of New York\u2019s Statue of Liberty by architect Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Auguste Bartholdi was first intended to represent an \u201cEgyptian peasant in Muslim garments.\u201d In his early designs, Bartholdi called the sculpture \u201cEgypt Carrying the Light to Asia.\u201d However, Egyptian officials rejected the statue as too expensive, leading the architect to take his plans to America. He had to drop her Islamic robe and transform her into a Roman Goddess, renaming her \u201cLiberty Enlightening the World.\u201d The statue has guarded New York\u2019s harbour since 1886.
